Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew is hoping to have more of an impact down the field this season making bigger plays. He ranked 28th among all tight ends with at least 30 catches last year with a 9.4 average yards per catch. Only Randy McMichael of the Chargers had a lower average (9.0). His seven catches of 20-plus yards or more ranked 19th among tight ends.
“I have had my chances down the field and I haven't always made that big play and I think for me that's what's going to separate me and make me that big time player,” Pettigrew said after practice Tuesday.
For what it’s worth, Pettigrew has been one of the favorite targets of Stafford early on in training camp. He’s even been a more noticeable presence down the field making receptions.

Quarterback Philip Rivers led San Diego to scores on two of three drives, then head coach Norv Turner earned his club score another touchdown with two successful challenges on a single series in the Chargers’ 20-7 victory over Dallas.
Rivers went 8 of 11 for 92 yards, with a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Randy McMichael.
Mathews outperformed Mike Tolbert in this one, but Tolbert is still the favorite for work around the goal line.

Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd are inactive for the Chargers tonight. Vincent Jackson becomes a borderline WR1 start with Legedu Naanee & Seyi Ajirotutu also in the mix. Randy McMichael is a TE2 option highly reliant on the TD.

Chargers TE Antonio Gates (toe, foot questionable) missed practice Friday after taking limited reps Thursday and is listed as questionable. Gates was in the training room Friday and said he was in tremendous pain after testing the feet in Thursday's practice. Gates looks unlikely to return to action this week. Randy McMichael (hamstring probable) did get in limited reps Friday but isn't a recommended fantasy option at less than 100%.
San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates has practiced once in five weeks but is listed as questionable for Monday's game against the Denver Broncos. That is an upgrade from the doubtful he was listed at prior to the Chargers' last game, Nov. 7 as Houston, for which Gates was inactive.
Gates has run on the side this week and the decision to play him could well come down to how he feels Monday afternoon.
It would take some guts to put Gates in your lineup given you won't know until Monday night if he'll be playing or not, but it's much better to see him listed as questionable as opposed to doubtful. Randy McMichael will see more action if Gates can't go.

Chargers TE Antonio Gates (toe, foot) missed practice again Friday as expected. Gates isn't expected to practice at all this week and told reporters he considers himself 50/50 for Monday Night. Gates will try to tough it out and play, but it will likely come down to a game-time decision, and the Monday Night start means owners gambling on Gates should have Randy McMichael rostered.

Chargers TE Antonio Gates (toe, foot doubtful) missed practice again Friday and is doubtful for Sunday. Gates has missed practice all week after "popping" the plantar fascia in his right foot, an extremely painful injury. Gates has been known to play through pain, but by all accounts this is as bad as it has ever been. Randy McMichael is an interesting play if Gates can't go and could see a decent amount of looks with the Chargers shockingly thin of pass catchers.

Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot) missed practice again Thursday. It doesn't sound like Gates will practice at all this week after "popping" the plantar fascia in his right foot, an extremely painful injury. Gates has been known to play through pain, but by all accounts this is as bad as it has ever been. Gates will be a game-time decision if he is not ruled out before Sunday, and will be in pain if he plays. Randy McMichael is an interesting play if Gates can't go and could see a decent amount of looks with the Chargers shockingly thin of pass catchers.

As expected, Antonio Gates is not practicing on the field while recovering from a mild form of plantar fasciitis.
Buster Davis, who suffered a concussion in minicamp, worked at receiver and punt returner. He is slated to be the No. 2 returner.
