Todd Heap's availability likely will be determined in the hours before Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings, coach Ken Whisenhunt said.

Heap suffered a hamstring injury in practice Wednesday and did not participate in Thursday's workout.

Fantasy Impact:

If Heap can't go, look for Jeff King to get a few extra opportunities for the Cardinals.

The Carolina Panthers placed restricted free-agent tenders on 14 players on Wednesday, including running back DeAngelo Williams, defensive end Charles Johnson and quarterback Matt Moore.

Cornerback Richard Marshall, linebacker James Anderson and tight ends Jeff King and Dante Rosario were also on the list.

There's a good chance, however, that many of these tenders won't be valid once a new collective bargaining agreement is reached.

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith is trying to diffuse any potential controversy involving him and rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen.

Smith, a four-time Pro Bowl player, said Wednesday that his sideline comments to Clausen during the Panthers' 20-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last weekend have been overblown by the media.

Television cameras caught Smith walking over to Clausen, who was talking with an assistant coach on the bench, and screaming at the rookie.

Smith walked away, then returned and said something else before being escorted away by tight end Jeff King. At that point, a frustrated Smith threw down his cup of Gatorade.

"It was said that I was just about to 'go off,' and I wasn't," Smith said after Wednesday's practice. "I thought it was interesting because here, I was obviously agitated and frustrated, but sometimes people think they know me better than I know myself. I think that's a joke, and I think the people that reported it are jokes."

A look at the Carolina Panthers tight ends:

Keep: Jeff King, Dante Rosario, Gary Barnidge. Cut: Jamie Petrowski.

This has been the lineup since day one, with injury the only thing changing it. Gives them a nice group of tight ends with complementary skills, but King’s clearly the lead dog in this pack.

Both starter Brad Hoover (high ankle sprain) and backup Tony Fiammetta (concussion) were held out of Wednesday's work, and there aren't any more around. Hoover's going to be out at least a few weeks, and the team's going to take head injuries seriously, so Fiammetta may not be back this week either.

That's going to leave the Panthers scrambling to fill in the position with the backs and tight ends they have on hand, because they don't even have one on the practice squad at the moment.

“It wouldn't change what you do,” coach John Fox said. “You don't re-tool your whole offense at this stage of the game. You just ask people to take on new roles. It will probably be more in that direction. Obviously, I'm not going to go into detail on who those people are or what we're doing for obvious reasons.”

Fox isn't going to tip his hand, but it isn't like they've got many options.

Their tight ends are blockers first, and Jeff King actually got his first action with the Panthers as an on-the-move blocker, sometimes coming out of the backfield, so it's not a foreign language to him.
