The San Francisco 49ers made an attempt to reinforce their receiving corps by signing free-agent wideout and return man Keshawn Martin to a two-year deal, per a report. The move fills up the vacant roster spot left by the retirement of offensive tackle Anthony Davis.
San Francisco signed Martin to a two-year deal on Tuesday, per NFL insider Rand Getlin.
He has 62 receptions for 685 yards and five touchdowns over his four-year NFL career. San Francisco’s offense currently ranks 29th in the league with just 876 yards gained. The Niners passing game has also generated a lowly 526 yards, which stands at No. 30 overall. Martin got a lot of attention last year when he was rumored to take over Julian Edelman's spot when he went down last year with a foot injury. Another note is Martin has broken a 70-plus yard kick or punt return in three of his four NFL seasons.
The Keshawn Martin release was a surprise. The Pats gave him a contract extension in January with a reported $600,000 in guarantees. Martin hardly practiced in training camp, and he suffered an injury in Thursday's preseason finale against the Giants. He limped through the locker room after the game with his left foot wrapped.
This release could be a signal that rookie receiver Malcolm Mitchell, who suffered an ugly looking injury in the preseason opener, could be ready by Week 1. It's unlikely that the Pats would enter that game with just two healthy wideouts. This also could be a signal that Danny Amendola will not start the year on the PUP, the story concluded.
The author didn't really say his opinion on who could emerge in that spot, but did say Carter and Harper can be placed on the practice squad while Dobson and Martin cannot. The author did say Carter is in the Edelman/Amendola mold which could provide some insurance since both are currently hurt.

Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot, out) missed practice Friday after taking limited reps Thursday and is out for Week 17. With Danny Amendola very iffy, it looks like Brandon LaFell and Keshawn Martin will lead the New England receiving corps again this week.
With the Patriots receiving corps ailing, one backup has stepped up and seized the opportunity in front of him.
Brady targeted Martin 11 times (seven catches, 68 yards). He threw to LaFell once.
Martin's name started to emerge soon after Edelman went down. Martin was battling his own injuries so it took a little longer, but Martin seems to be a key part of the offense and earning Brady's trust with all the injuries to the position in New England.

It's never easy for a wide receiver to jump in midseason, or late season, and pick up the New England Patriots' offense.
Apparently, the Leonard Hankerson addition didn't go as the team had hoped.
Hankerson, claimed off waivers from Atlanta on Dec. 16, lasted only 10 days in the New England, according to ProFootballTalk.
Both Amendola and LaFell are questionable Sunday due to injuries sustained in Week 15 versus the Titans. Amendola injured his left knee, the one that kept him out of the Week 12 game versus Denver. And LaFell appeared to injure his left foot, the one that kept him on the PUP list until Week 7.

Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) missed practice again Thursday. He remains out for another month or so. Danny Amendola, Brandon LaFell and Keshawn Martin are trying to hold down the fort until he can return.

Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 13. He’s not going to play for a while. Danny Amendola, Brandon LaFell and Keshawn Martin will have to pick up the slack.

Patriots WR Keshawn Martin (hamstring, questionable) took limited practice reps all week and is questionable for Week 12. He was limited all last week as well before being ruled out on game day. There is definitely opportunity in the New England receiving corps with Julian Edelman out and Danny Amendola potentially sidelined.

Patriots WR Danny Amendola (knee) did not practice Wednesday. Amendola is not expected to miss much time, but he’s iffy for Week 12 against Denver. If he’s out, Keshawn Martin and/or Chris Harper will pick up his snaps.

Patriots WR Keshawn Martin (hamstring) took limited practice reps Wednesday. Martin has been limited for some time now. With Danny Amendola potentially on the shelf, there is plenty of playing time available in the New England receiving corps.
Keyshawn Martin was questionable coming into this contest but recently popped up on the fantasy radar when stories broke he had a chance to take on the Julian Edelman role. However, that will at least have to wait a week. Aaron Dobson became questionable today, but is active tonight and should play behind Danny Amendola and Brandon LaFell.

Dobson is listed as questionable. No word as to how or when the injury surfaced, but it could further deplete New England’s receiving corps if he’s unable to play. Dobson is the team’s fourth wideout behind Brandon LaFell, Danny Amendola and Keshawn Martin, though Martin is also questionable with a hamstring injury.
