Steelers cut Josh Scobee, sign Chris Boswell

Josh Scobee's miserable fourth quarter against the Baltimore Ravens cost him his job.

The Steelers cut the veteran kicker on Saturday, less than 48 hours after a pair of late missed field goals by Scobee helped the Ravens rally for a 23-20 overtime victory.

Pittsburgh replaced Scobee on the roster with Chris Boswell, who has spent time with the Houston Texans and New York Giants but has never kicked in a regular season game.

The Steelers acquired Scobee from Jacksonville on Aug. 31 in exchange for a sixth pick in the 2016 draft following injuries to Shaun Suisham and Garrett Hartley in the preseason. Scobee, the leading scorer in Jacksonville history, made just 6 of 10 field goals and also missed an extra point.

Fantasy Impact:

Like all those before him, Boswell should have fantasy value given the talent on the Pittsburgh offense and its ability to move the ball. Of course, the offense takes a bit of a hit with Michael Vick at QB, but Ben Roethlisberger is expected to return which will given everyone a boost. Boswell is at least worth considering if you're in need at the position.

Steelers trade for K Josh Scobee

The Steelers quest to find a healthy kicker has led them to trade for one.

According to Jeff Prosser of 1010XL in Jacksonville, Josh Scobee is already en route to the Steelers.

Scobee was the longest-tenured Jaguars player, having worked for them since 2004, when he was chosen in the fourth round. They’re now handing the job to rookie Jason Myers.

The Steelers lost Shaun Suisham to a torn ACL in the preseason opener, and replacement Garrett Hartley suffered a hamstring injury Saturday that looked like it was going to keep him out of the regular season opener.

Fantasy Impact:

Now the Steelers have a reliable veteran in the last year of his contract, giving them some stability at the position going into the season. Scobee should climb the rankings and get lots of chances in what is expected to be a high-powered offense.

The question posed to 12 veteran players this week: “If you had to pick one —and ONLY ONE — player who has impressed you the most during camp, who would it be and why?”

The winner: Ace Sanders, receiver and punt returner (5 votes)

Even the veterans who are casual college football watchers knew Denard Robinson because he played a high-profile position (quarterback) and made high-profile plays (touchdowns) for a high-profile program (Michigan).
But Sanders has been a revelation.

“Everybody’s saying Ace, right?” kicker Josh Scobee said.

Just about.

“He’s just a special talent,” linebacker Russell Allen said. “Obviously we haven’t played in a regular season game yet, but so far, he’s been fun to watch.”

Fantasy Impact:

Sanders is a player to monitor, especially early in the season with Justin Blackmon suspended for four games.

Contract talks between the Jaguars and franchise-tagged kicker Josh Scobee are stalled right now.

The Jaguars placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Scobee in March, but he hasn’t signed it. The team has said it would like to sign Scobee to a long-term deal and was disappointed it didn’t before the franchising deadline.

According to a league source familiar with the negotiations, Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski’s contract is part of the reason Scobee’s contract talks have stalled. Janikowski is the highest-paid kicker in the NFL, having signed a four-year deal worth $4 million per year two years ago.
