Presumptive Raiders starting quarterback Matt Schaub sat out practice Sunday with a sore elbow, a scene eerily similar to a situation a year ago that led to the ascension of Terrelle Pryor as the starting quarterback at the expense of Matt Flynn.

“He came in yesterday afternoon with a little soreness in his elbow,’’ Raiders coach Dennis Allen said. “We’ll see where he’s at tomorrow and kind of take that day by day.’’

Schaub is scheduled to speak to the media following practice Monday and was unavailable for comment. The Raiders host the Seattle Seahawks in their preseason finale Thursday night at O.co Coliseum.

Fantasy Impact:
All the work in practice went to rookie Derek Carr, second-year player Matt McGloin and veteran Trent Edwards, with Carr getting first-team reps, according to Allen.

Terrelle Pryor has sprained MCL

ESPN - [Full Article]

Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor has a sprained MCL in his right knee, he said after the Raiders' 24-20 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday.

"My knee is banged up," he said.

"I've got a sprained MCL. It just got worse during the week. So I was just trying to come out and play and try to help the team but just didn't feel well today."

Fantasy Impact:
Pryor sprained the knee last week and said it got worse during the week leading up to the Giants game. Pryor added he couldn't get any push off his leg and couldn't explode in the passing game. The only other quarterback on the Raiders' active roster is undrafted rookie Matt McGloin out of Penn State, while fourth-round draft pick Tyler Wilson is on the practice squad. The Raiders worked out veterans David Carr, Trent Edwards and Pat White last month.

The search for a quality backup passer behind Jay Cutler rages on.

The Chicago Bears announced Sunday that Trent Edwards has been signed to a contract, adding him to a pool of reserves that includes Josh McCown, Jordan Palmer and Matt Blanchard.

It's another clear signal the Bears have no interest in making JaMarcus Russell a part of the team. Edwards and Palmer joined Russell for a Friday workout with the team, triggered partially by Blanchard suffering a fractured knuckle on his non-throwing hand.

Eagles quarterback Mike Kafka seems to have the edge as the backup to Michael Vick. Kafka continued to take a majority of the second team work at Eagles training camp on Thursday, Aug. 2.

Trent Edwards was signed as a free agent in the offseason, but only got work with the third team. The Birds drafted Nick Foles in the third round this spring as well.

Fantasy Impact:
Kafka wasn't impressive in his work last season as a QB3 when Mike Vick and Vince Young couldn't play. He doesn't seem to have a lot of arm strength, but does have some accuracy. He won't get drafted in your league, but if you're a Vick owner, it's probably best to go in another direction if Vick gets hurt. Better yet, reach a round or two early to draft a reliable backup.

Trent Edwards and Kyle Boller were locked in a tight competition for the backup spot at quarterback to unquestioned starter Jason Campbell.

That might have changed Sunday night. Boller completed 5 of 7 passes for 69 yards and looked morer poised in the pocket. At one point, he released a deep pass for Hagan, knowing full well he was going to get flattened.

Sure enough, Boller wound up on his back, but Hagan caught the ball and turned it into a 35-yard gain.

Edwards didn’t have the benefit of working with many first- and second-team players, as did Boller. Still, he looked unsure on several plays and was sacked three times. He also lost a fumble out of the shotgun.

Jaguars QB David Garrard (right finger) has been ruled out for week 17. Trent Edwards will get the start for the Jaguars. While Edwards would not normally be a fantasy option, the Jaguars are playing the leagues worst secondary in the Texans, allowing 277 passing yards per contest. A big day is not out of the question.

Jaguars WR Mike Sims-Walker (ankle) returned to limited practice Thursday. Walker played a limited role last week, with Jason Hill getting the start. Even in a great matchup, don't count on much from Walker, especially with Trent Edwards under center.

Jags Garrard won't be ready for playoffs

Florida Times Union - [Full Article]

At one point in Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins, Jaguars quarterback David Garrard remembers picking yellow paint off the fingers on his throwing hand.

By then, the damage was already done.

Garrard will have surgery in Jacksonville today to repair a torn ligament in the middle finger of his right hand. He will miss Sunday's season finale in Houston and any playoff games should the Jaguars make the postseason. Trent Edwards will start in Garrard's place.

"I feel confident in him. I know he'll do a fine job," Garrard said. "I thought actually it would be a simple, quick process and be out rehabbing it in a couple weeks. But it's actually quite a lengthy process."

Garrard said the rehab on his finger will take about two months.

The quarterback was one of four Jaguars players who didn't practice Wednesday. Running back Maurice Jones-Drew, linebacker Justin Durant and receiver Mike Sims-Walker missed practice as well. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said of those four, Sims-Walker is the "most likely" to return.
