There is concern QB Ben Roethlisberger has broken foot
Monday, October 3, 2011, 3:39pm

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - [Full Article]

Ben Roethlisberger limped out of the locker room with a boot on his left foot, and there was concern it might be broken. X-rays were not immediately revealed and Roethlisberger said he was unaware if it was broken.

"I don't know," Roethlisberger said of the prospect of playing against Tennessee Sunday at Heinz Field. "You know me, if I can be out there I'm going to be out there. That's so for next week, too."

Fantasy Impact:

Backups are Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon. Obviously this puts a bit of a hit on Mike Wallace's value. The Steelers would normally turn to their running game, but their offensive line is banged up to the point it hasn't been successful at all this year.

Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Byron Leftwich has a broken upper left arm and likely will go on injured reserve, ending his season.

Leftwich, scheduled again to be the No. 2 quarterback this season, was injured early in the third quarter, on his first series of the game.

However, the Steelers did receive some good news on center Maurkice Pouncey, who limped off the field in the first quarter. Pouncey has a sprained left ankle and should be fine for the start of the regular season Sept. 11.

The injury to Leftwich means that the Steelers will keep both Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon as quarterbacks behind Roethlisberger. The two had been competing for the third and final spot on the depth chart at the position.

Veteran Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Byron Leftwich suffered a broken arm tonight against the Atlanta Falcons. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that the former top-ten draft pick will be out for a while.

The injury leaves the Steelers with three healthy quarterbacks: Ben Roethlisberger, Dennis Dixon, and Charlie Batch.

Even though he signed his one-year tender as a restricted free agent, Dennis Dixon might be the odd man out as the No. 3 quarterback.

The Steelers will keep four quarterbacks through training camp in case there is an injury to one of the backups. But right now it appears Charlie Batch, not Dixon, will be kept as the backup behind Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich.

Batch, 36, showed last season he could still be an effective backup, helping the Steelers to a 3-1 start when Roethlisberger was serving a four-game suspension. Batch is in his 14th NFL season.

Quarterback Dennis Dixon will sign his one-year restricted free-agent tender with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the AFC North blog has learned. The move is expected as early as Monday, which will allow Dixon to practice with Pittsburgh later this week.

According to Dixon's agent Jeff Sperbeck, the desire for a trade and an opportunity to compete for a starting job remains the same. But it was best for Dixon to get into training camp before he missed more time.

Quarterback Dennis Dixon, a restricted free agent, did not sign his tender and has yet to report to Pittsburgh Steelers training camp.

Dixon's agent, Jeff Sperbeck, says his client prefers a chance to compete for another team over backing up two-time Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh.

Dixon was drafted by the Steelers in 2008 and has been Roethlisberger's backup the past three seasons.

"Dennis would love the opportunity to start," Sperbeck said. "Yes, we would look forward to an opportunity for a trade - it's a starting opportunity we're looking for."

Steelers QB Dennis Dixon Placed on Injured Reserve

Pittsburgh will place quarterback Dennis Dixon on injured reserve.

Fantasy Impact:

The Steelers will get Ben Roethlisberger back in week six, so this isn't a tremendous loss, especially in light of Charlie Batch's solid performance last Sunday in Tampa.

Pittsburgh Post Gazette - [Full Article]

The Steelers have no plans to place quarterback Dennis Dixon, who had surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus last Wednesday, on injured reserve this week. When Roethlisberger returns, however, they will have to make room for him on their 53-man roster and are not likely to keep four quarterbacks.

"They say from four to six weeks, but every time it's different," Tomlin said of the length of time Dixon is expected to miss. "We're hopeful he's going to get back to us quickly."

Putting him on injured reserve, "depends on how games go," Tomlin said.
