David Akers Fantasy News

The Detroit Lions released K Giorgio Tavecchio.

Tavecchio had been competing with Nate Freese for the place-kicking duties to replace David Akers, who struggled last season.

But Freese, a seventh-round draft pick, apparently has won the job.

Fantasy Impact:

Freese should climb your rankings a bit especially if you're one to wait at the position. The Lions should be able to move the ball again this year and with their home games in a dome, Freese should produce decent numbers at the position to make him a low-end starter.

It’s possible that the Eagles’ kicker for the 2014 season is not currently on their roster.

They are obviously not totally sold on Alex Henery, who has missed from 47 and 31 yards this preseason.

Cody Parkey was acquired from the Colts for running back David Fluellen on Wednesday and will get a brief tryout for the job. If the team isn’t satisfied with either option, they’ll look to the outside for help.

Fantasy Impact:

There are some big names available should the Eagles decide to go that direction. Mentioned on the list were Rob Bironas, David Akers and Rian Lindell among others. It's a situation to keep an eye on because the Birds will put up points this season, and place their kicker in situations to put up points, too - but they'll have to trust him first.

Jim Schwartz gave embattled kicker David Akers a public vote of confidence after he missed his fifth kick of the season in Thursday’s 40-10 win over the Green Bay Packers, but the Detroit Lions are planning to work out kickers next week as they weigh their options at the position.

Akers, who signed a one-year deal to replace long-time kicker Jason Hanson in April, has made just 15 of 20 field-goal attempts this year and the Lions rank 29th in the league in field-goal percentage.

Fantasy Impact:

Akers missed a 31-yarder on Thanksgiving against the Packers and is coming off a shaky season with the 49ers, so the Lions have to play this one smart as the playoffs drawn near. Akers is safe - for now.

K David Akers has agreed to a deal with the Lions, according to his agent, Jerrold Colton.

Fantasy Impact:

Akers was terrific in 2011 before a brutal 2012 season, where he missed 10 of 19 FGs beyond 40 yards. If he can get his mojo back, he should get plenty of opportunities since the Lions usually do a solid job of moving the ball.

The San Jose Mercury News - [Full Article]

The 49ers released kicker David Akers on Wednesday.

In two seasons with the 49ers, Akers made 73 of 94 field goal attempts and was perfect on all 78 extra-point attempts.

In 2011, Akers set an NFL record with 44 field goals, 52 field-goal attempts and 166 points. He also tied the NFL record for longest field goal with a 63-yarder in the 2012 season opener at Green Bay.

Fantasy Impact:

He made just 29 of 42 field goals in 2012, which led to his release.

David Akers has earned the right to kick for the 49ers in the playoffs, Jim Harbaugh said Thursday.

Akers, who struggled in the regular season, won a six-day completion against new addition Billy Cundiff, who the 49ers signed last week.

Fantasy Impact:

David Akers remains with the team, so at this point it's not clear who will kick for the 49ers next week. They may hold a competition and release the loser before the Divisional Round.

San Francisco Chronicle - [Full Article]

David Akers missed a 39-yard field-goal attempt late in the first quarter of Sunday night's win over New England, his latest misstep in a wildly inconsistent season. Akers is 25-for-35 on field-goal tries this season, and head coach Jim Harbaugh clearly is losing patience.

"Specialists sometimes only get four or five opportunities a game, and you've got to make the play," Harbaugh said Monday. "You've got to see him do it, got to see him make those plays."

Harbaugh insisted Akers is still part of the team. Asked if there was any thought to making a change, Harbaugh replied, "No, not at this time."

Fantasy Impact:

Fantasy owners should probably at least think about going another direction with the inconsistent Akers. According to the story, the breakdown on Akers this season: He's 8-for-8 inside 30 yards, 10-for-12 from 30 to 39 yards, 6-for-10 from 40 to 49 yards and 1-for-5 from 50 yards and beyond.

49ers will stick with Colin Kaepernick

Monday, December 3, 2012, 9:20am

The Sacramento Bee - [Full Article]

Jim Harbaugh all but quashed any notion that Colin Kaepernick's bad pitch and the 49ers' subsequent loss would lead to a change at quarterback.

"I will let you know if there's a change," Harbaugh said afterward. "But right now, I feel as if (the starter vs. Miami) it would be the same this week. And I'm proud of Kap - proud of the way he played. He did some things, some really good things, under a lot of heat and duress and handled himself well, gave our team a chance to win."

Fantasy Impact:

Kaepernick was 21-for-32 for 208 yards in the game and rushed for 84 more yards, including a 50-yard run that set up David Akers' go-ahead field goal late. But, he also committed the game's biggest error - an errant pitch to Ted Ginn with 3:06 remaining and the 49ers in control of the game. Still, Kaepernick's fantasy value is way higher than Alex Smith's, and this week's matchup against the Dolphins should put CK around the low-end QB1 area.
