And while he passed the test, he was not put back into the game.
“That was my call,” 49ers coach Jim Tomsula said.
The game was out of hand by the time Hyde went into the locker room for the evaluation.
“I got hit on the crown of my helmet, so I was dizzy when I got up,” said Hyde, who finished with 43 yards on 14 carries (he also lost a fumble on an exchange in the shotgun with quarterback Colin Kaepernick) a week after his Monday Night Football star turn with 168 yards rushing.
“I felt better when I got to the sideline. The concussion test, I passed that and I was ready to go but they pulled me.”
Hyde took a beating all game long, because even before Steelers safety Mike Mitchell caught him with the helmet shot, he sent Hyde to the sidelines in the first half with a leg tackle. Since Hyde passed the test and it seems as though it was a coach's decision to keep him out, perhaps we can assume his Week 3 outlook is OK at this time. The 49ers play at Arizona in Week 3.
