Panthers WR Brandon LaFell, the third-round draft pick is the heir apparent to Muhsin Muhammad to start alongside Steve L Smith. Dwayne Jarrett might still be listed first team on the depth chart, but LaFell is clearly the man to watch.

He has outstanding natural ability and was a standout downfield blocker in college, which is a requirement for whoever plays the position in Carolina's run-first offense.

Having nearly a month to work on his trade gives LaFell the opportunity to make a claim for the position.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s kept close tabs on the Panthers personnel moves this off-season, but a source close to WR Muhsin Muhammad told Carolina Growl that he “won’t be playing for Carolina.”

Muhammad turns 37 this year and the team wants to get younger at that position. Earlier this off-season the Panthers purged their roster of a handful of guys who were older than 30.

Some felt the team might try to bring him back Muhammad back as a No. 3 receiver, but that definitely isn’t going to happen.

Stewart Questionable, Williams Doubtful

The Panthers just wrapped up their final full practice of the year, and they did so without RBs DeAngelo Williams and Tyrell Sutton. Both are listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against New Orleans.

RB Jonathan Stewart worked, and he's listed as questionable, along with WR Muhsin Muhammad, QB Matt Moore, CB Richard Marshall and RT Geoff Schwartz, all of whom practiced fully.

It was a leisurely affair, conducted without helmets or pads. A little bone for his players, after everybody showed up on time this morning and no one got arrested.

Still no word on the roster move accompanying Steve Smith going on IR, but that will likely come later today or tomorrow. Expect a practice squad call-up, and I'm guessing it'll be RB Decori Birmingham because they're so thin at the position.

Panthers Running backs DeAngelo Williams (ankle), Jonathan Stewart (Achilles) and Tyrerll Sutton (ankle) were among the players who didn't participate in practice. It's customary for Stewart to rest on Wednesdays.

Also sitting out: right tackle Geoff Schwartz (groiin(, cornerback Richard Marshall (ankle), ajd wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad (ankle).

Quarterback Matt Moore (rib) practiced on a limited basis.
