Scouting report

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Saquon Barkley was the RB6 last year in half-PPR formats, rushing for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns in 16 games. Barkley also caught 57 balls for 338 yards, his most receptions since his rookie year. Barkley is still one of the most talented and versatile backs in the league and he should be in the middle of his prime at age 26.

Fantasy Downside
Barkley had a couple injury-plagued seasons prior to his return to form in 2022, so durability is always a concern. He still plays a position with a high attrition rate. Still, the biggest concern is his contract situation. If he misses considerable time during training camp and preseason and reports late, then the injury concerns go up even more. If he holds out for any length of time, his second-round ADP becomes too expensive to gamble on him.

2023 Bottom Line
Barkley will be great if he shows up and he stays healthy, but those are both concerns. All things equal, he has as much potential to finish as the RB1 overall as anyone, but we have him conservatively ranked a few spots lower than he finished in 2022. Be cautious with Barkley, perhaps waiting to see if his ADP slides before investing in him this season. Barkley is definitely someone I’d rather draft in late-August than in late-July.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Indianapolis Colts

Saquon Barkley had a nice game last week against the Vikings, gaining 84 yards on 14 carries and scoring a touchdown. He also added 49 yards on eight receptions and now has 55 catches on the year. Barkley’s workload gives him a high floor every week, as he’s averaging 22.5 touches per game this season.

This week, Barkley has a great matchup against the Colts, who rank 27th in aFPA to opposing running backs and just gave up two touchdowns to Austin Ekeler on Monday night. We have him ranked as an elite option once again and he should be active in all fantasy leagues.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Minnesota Vikings

Saquon Barkley got back on track last week against the Commanders, rushing for 87 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. He also added 33 yards on five receptions, turning in the numbers fantasy managers have come to expect out of him this season. Barkley continues to be one of the best multi-faceted weapons in football and he’s scored a touchdown in all but five games this year.

This week, Barkley faces a Vikings defense that ranks 13th in aFPA to opposing running backs. Expect another busy day for Barkley and another RB1 performance. Barkley is still an active part of the offense on passing downs, so even if the Vikings get ahead early on, he should still produce. Start him as an elite option.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Washington Commanders

Saquon Barkley had a tough outing in a lopsided loss to the Eagles last week. He finished with just nine carries and two receptions for a total of 48 yards from scrimmage. Barkley has struggled over the past four weeks, averaging just 2.9 yards per carry and only 3.25 receptions per game in that span. Still, he remains the primary cog in the offense, and has been able to find the end zone two of those last four.

This week, Barkley has a tough matchup against Washington. The Commanders rank sixth in aFPA to opposing running backs and are fresh off a bye. Barkley seems to be healthy now, but he’s been playing at less than 100% for several weeks now and the Giants are limping to the finish line, offensively. Still, how workload and end zone potential make him a must-start, and we have him ranked as a fringe-RB1 option this week.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Saquon Barkley had 18 carries and five receptions for a total of 81 yards and a touchdown last week in a tie with the Commanders. Barkley has cooled off from a yardage perspective over the past three games, but he’s still found the end zone in two of them and has at least five targets in each. His workload and role as the primary weapon in this offense give him a high enough floor to warrant RB1 potential every week, and his ceiling is as high as it gets.

This week, Barkley faces an Eagles defense that ranks 16th in aFPA to opposing running backs. Barkley should once again be leaned on, making him a must-start, but in a game where the Giants could be trailing for much of the way, temper expectations. We have ranked as a low-end RB1 instead of an elite option.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Washington Commanders

Saquon Barkley was held to just 39 yards on 11 carries last week against the Cowboys, although he found the end zone and caught four balls for 13 yards, salvaging an otherwise forgettable fantasy performance. He’s had a couple tough games on the ground in a row now, but he’s still averaging 3.2 receptions per game, helping to boost his weekly totals.

Barkley has a brutal matchup this week against a Commanders defense that ranks second in aFPA to opposing running backs. He’s still worth starting due to his workload and talent, but temper expectations. We have him ranked as a low-end RB1 instead of as the elite force he usually is.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Dallas Cowboys

Saquon Barkley surprisingly struggled against the surging Lions last week, as he was held to just 35 total yards on 15 carries and a pair of receptions. Barkley is still having a fantasy bounce-back season, however, and one bad outing shouldn’t deter fantasy managers from counting on him moving forward.

This may not be the best game for high expectations, however. Barkley has a tough matchup against the Cowboys. Dallas ranks sixth in aFPA to opposing running backs. Still, his talent, workload, and role in the passing game make him a must-start every week, regardless of matchup. Temper expectations, but keep him active as a top-10 fantasy option.
