Scouting report

NYG RB Orleans Darkwa - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Orleans Darkwa led the Giants with 9 carries for 35 yards in Week 7 before the bye last week. Those aren’t great numbers, but the Giants only ran the ball 17 times on the day, and Darkwa was still the primary back. He’s averaging 5.4 yards per carry this season and looks to be the most explosive runner in the Giants' backfield.

This week, Darkwa should do well against a Rams defense allowing the third-most rushing touchdowns this season with 8. The Rams also allow 4.6 yards per carry to opposing runners, and if Darkwa can get closer to the 21 carries he received against Denver two games ago, he should be a viable RB2 option.

NYG RB Orleans Darkwa - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Orleans Darkwa had a fantastic game against the league’s top run defense last week, averaging 5.6 yards on 21 carries and totaling 130 yards from scrimmage. Darkwa looked more effective than the other backs in New York, and if he can stay healthy, he should retain the starting job.

This week, Darkwa’s workload should give him RB2 potential, but if you have another option, he’s probably best to sit. The Seahawks have been more vulnerable against the run than in years past—allowing 4.9 yards per carry—but they’ve only given up 4 rushing touchdowns this season. Also, there's no guarantee Wayne Gallman doesn’t cut into Darkwa’s workload.

NYG RB Orleans Darkwa - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Orleans Darkwa was banged up last week, which allowed rookie Wayne Gallman the chance to show what he could do. Darkwa was on the cusp of taking the starting job away from Paul Perkins prior to last week, so he still has some potential, but Gallman’s solid Week 4 outing makes the situation murky at best. Darkwa is worth holding, but way too risky to have in your lineup.

NYG RB Orleans Darkwa - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Orleans Darkwa had 7 carries for 22 yards and he also caught an 11-yard reception last week against the Eagles. He’s a little banged up after leaving the game early, but he’s shown he can be more effective than starter Paul Perkins as the Giants' main back. Until he takes the job and shows he’s healthy, it’s hard to trust him in your lineup, but he’s worth stashing on the back-end of your roster if you have the space.

NYG RB Orleans Darkwa - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Philadelphia Eagles

Orleans Darkwa isn’t worth starting this week, but he’s quietly been the most impressive of the three Giants running backs through the first two weeks of the season, albeit on limited touches. Darkwa has averaged 5.2 yards on 6 carries through the first two games, which should lead to more playing time moving forward. His upside is limited by a poor offensive line and the presence of Shane Vereen as the primary pass-catching back, but he should be considered a decent stash option in case he can pry away the two-down job from the disappointing Paul Perkins.

NYG RB Orleans Darkwa - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Now entering his fourth season with the Giants, Orleans Darkwa knows the offense and will try to take advantage of New York’s hole at the RB spot. While second-year player Paul Perkins is penciled in as the starter, he wasn’t particularly impressive as a rookie, which may open up opportunities for Darkwa. He’s a powerful runner who plays with a low center of gravity and could produce if he gets a consistent workload.

Fantasy Downside

While Darkwa seems to be ahead of rookie Wayne Gallman, he hasn’t yet grabbed the job outright from Perkins, which makes him a risky gamble. Additionally, Shane Vereen is healthy right now and will be the primary pass-catcher, limiting Darkwa’s potential to contribute on third down.

2017 Bottom Line

Darkwa has looked good in camp, making him worth paying attention to on a team that doesn’t have a clear-cut RB1 on the roster. The most likely scenario is Perkins wins and keeps the job, but if fantasy owners in larger leagues have an extra roster spot, holding Darkwa as a potential stash player isn’t a bad idea.

NYG RB Orleans Darkwa - Week 6, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Baltimore
Orleans Darkwa had only 11 yards on seven carries against Green Bay last week. While he led the team in rushing attempts, he split snaps with rookie Paul Perkins and seems to be losing his grip on the backup job. Plus, Bobby Rainey plays the passing down role, limiting Darkwa’s upside.

This week, Rashad Jennings may be back, but even if he isn’t, Darkwa is too risky to use. He’s going up against the fifth-best run defense in the league and he’s slowly losing grip of his job. Run away.
