JAX WR Laviska Shenault - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Tennessee Titans
Laviska Shenault looks poised to be the primary beneficiary of the season-ending ankle injury to D.J. Chark that occurred last Sunday. Chark's early departure led to a career day for Shenault, who saw seven targets and racked up 110 total yards on six receptions and a carry. The Jags will be forced to get Shenault more involved than ever before without Chark in the lineup, and the constant negative game scripts the Jacksonville offense faces suggest he could see enough volume to be relevant in PPR leagues. In Week 5, the Jags will face off with a Titans defense that just let Zach Wilson and the Jets move the ball in Week 4. Shenault's YAC skills and versatility make him an interesting fantasy option if his usage increases without Chark. Even if you don't start Shenualt as a flex this week, his volume will be worth monitoring to see if he's carved out a bigger role going forward.

JAX WR Laviska Shenault - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Denver Broncos
Laviska Shenault entered Week 1 with the most fantasy hype of any Jacksonville receiver, but his Week 1 usage suggests he may end up being a PPR darling and little more. Shenault caught seven of his nine targets but had an extremely low aDOT of 4.0 yards, resulting in only 50 scoreless receiving yards on his seven catches. PPR players will take seven receptions any day, but Shenault is not going to post huge yardage totals or score many touchdowns while limited to short and intermediate routes in a bad offense. You can start Shenault as a flex in PPR leagues as his manufactured touches should give him a workable floor in that format, but he is at extreme risk for a total dud in standard leagues, especially against a tough Broncos defense in Week 2.

JAX WR Laviska Shenault - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 @ Houston Texans
Laviska Shenault enters his sophomore NFL season as a bit of an unknown, having put up a 58-600-5 rookie line in an abysmal Jacksonville offense. The addition of #1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence under center can do nothing but benefit Shenault, who demonstrated the ability to be efficient last year even under difficult circumstances. The Jags receiver group is difficult to project as it currently stands, but Shenault may avoid some of the uncertainty due to his role in the slot. In Week 1, Shenault will face off with a poor Texans secondary, making him an interesting flex option as we see how the targets shake out with Lawrence at QB and Urban Meyer on the sideline.

JAX WR Laviska Shenault - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
As SI.com reminded readers, all offseason long, slot receivers were being mocked to the Jaguars in the first or second round. But after missing out on Florida's Kadarius Toney in the first round of April's draft, the team pivoted to RB Travis Etienne, to the benefit of Laviska Shenault Jr. In addition to receiving a massive quarterback upgrade, Shenault may be the favorite to lead the Jaguars in slot usage. He and Marvin Jones Jr. each spent just over 50 percent of snaps in the slot last year, but while Jones was more productive in terms of volume, Shenault was one of the most efficient slot receivers in the league. He ranked sixth in both yards after catch per reception and contested catch rate on slot targets among 68 qualifying receivers last year per PFF. He also ranked 27th in yards per route run despite ranking second-to-last in average depth of target ahead of only Deebo Samuel, who literally averaged negative air yards on slot targets.

Fantasy Downside
Shenault will be playing in a new offense, with a new coaching staff and plenty of new personnel surrounding him. It's not necessarily a recipe for disaster, but there's something to be said for continuity.

2021 Bottom Line
Shenault is talented enough to win on the perimeter, but his full potential may be unlocked by being Jacksonville's de facto slot receiver. With Trevor Lawrence as their triggerman, all the Jaguars receivers should make out, but don't sleep on Shenault based on that anticipated role.

JAX WR Laviska Shenault - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Indianapolis Colts
With Mike Glennon under center for Jacksonville last week, Laviska Shenault caught a team-high five passes for 48 yards and scored his third TD of the season. One of the rookie’s other touchdowns came in the opener versus the Colts but he’s no more than a WR3/flex play in the finale.

JAX WR Laviska Shenault - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Chicago Bears
In the loss at Baltimore last week, Laviska Shenault led the Jaguars with six targets, catching five passes for 43 yards. The rookie has fewer than 50 receiving yards in seven in a row and has only two TDs this year. Versus an average Chicago pass defense, Shenault doesn’t make for a good fantasy start.

JAX WR Laviska Shenault - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Baltimore Ravens
Jaguars QBs threw over 50 passes in the loss to the Titans last Sunday, with Laviska Shenault hauling in six balls for 49 yards on a career-high 11 targets. The reception total was his second-highest but he has only two TDs on the season. Shenault is a WR3/flex play at best against what historically has been a solid Baltimore defense.
