Scouting report

BAL RB Justin Forsett - Week 4, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Oakland
Justin Forsett is still splitting time with Terrance West in the Baltimore backfield, but he has stepped up in the passing game. While getting only 32 yards from scrimmage last week against the Jaguars, he caught six of seven passes thrown his way. This should make him a buy-low PPR option right now, but the timeshare continues to be concerning for the veteran.

This week, Forsett has a little upside against the Raiders, who have allowed more passing yards than anyone this year, and rank 29th in the league in rushing yards allowed. They’re allowing 5.1 yards per carry, which should allow someone in Baltimore to get some points. He’s risky and could also be affected by Kenneth Dixon’s return if the rookie is finally healthy, but if Dixon is out, Forsett could be considered a low-end RB3 in PPR formats.

BAL RB Justin Forsett - Week 3, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Jacksonville
Justin Forsett got 14 carries and three receptions last week against the Browns, but he only managed 46 total yards and averaged a mere 2.6 yards per carry. None of the Baltimore RBs are looking particularly effective through two games this season, and fantasy owners should be concerned about rookie Kenneth Dixon taking over when he gets healthy.

This week, Forsett has a pretty good matchup against the Jaguars. Jacksonville gave up 102 yards and a touchdown on the ground to Melvin Gordon in a blowout loss. However, because Forsett is still sharing carries with Terrance West at a 51/49% split, he should be considered a risky RB3 option at best. It’s time to start stashing Dixon.

BAL RB Justin Forsett - Week 2, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Cleveland

Justin Forsett carried the ball 10 times last week against the Bills for 41 yards, and he added 15 yards on two receptions in the passing game as he split time with Terrance West in the backfield. Forsett was on the field for 34 snaps on Sunday, compared to 30 for West, which isn’t a good sign for fantasy owners hoping that Forsett emerges as the top back, even though he was more effective running the ball than West was – 4.1 yards per carry compared to 2.7.

This week, Forsett has upside against the Browns defense that allowed more rushing yards last year than anyone other than the Eagles and the Saints. However, it’s hard to imagine him as anything better than a low-end RB3 in most leagues since he’ll continue to share touches with West. Fantasy owners should use him with caution.

BAL RB Justin Forsett - Week 1, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Buffalo
Justin Forsett only had 641 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games last year before a broken arm ended his season. He’ll be 31 years old on next month and was released and then quickly re-signed last week during the final roster cuts period. With as many as three other backs on the depth chart vying for touches, Forsett is going to need to better than he was last year if he’s going to keep his job.

Buffalo was very average against the run last year, ranking 16th in yards allowed on the ground and giving up 10 rushing touchdowns all season. Forsett should be the starter, which gives him value, but if he ends up sharing carries as is expected, he could have limited effectiveness. He’s a low end RB3 option at best this week and the whole Baltimore backfield should be largely avoided in most leagues.

BAL RB Justin Forsett - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Justin Forsett should be the favorite to enter the 2016 season as the primary runner in Baltimore. He averaged 15.1 carries and 3.1 catches per game before a broken arm ended his season last year, and the Ravens upgraded their offensive line in the draft with first-round pick Ronnie Stanley out of Notre Dame set to start at left tackle. Forsett is a versatile player who had 14.7 carries and 2.8 receptions per game in 2014, and will be given every opportunity to keep his job as the main back this season.

Fantasy Downside
Forsett regressed a bit on a per game basis last season, finishing with 641 yards on the ground and only two touchdowns before missing the final six games. That’s concerning because he’ll turn 31 in October, an age when running backs are typically in a steady decline. Additionally, he’ll have more competition this season. Sophomore Javorius Allen had an uneven rookie year, but was the third-most targeted player for the Ravens last year. And Baltimore drafted Kenneth Dixon out of Louisiana Tech in the fourth round of this year's draft. Even holdover Terrance West has looked good in camp. Forsett will need to show he’s healthy and back to his 2015 form if he’s going to hold on to the starting job.

2016 Bottom Line
As the likely starter, Forsett has some value as the third running back on your roster, especially in the 10th round, where his ADP is. It would be easier to count on him if there were only one other player challenging him for touches, but with Allen, Dixon, and maybe even Terrance West in play for work, it’s hard to back up Forsett with a reliable handcuff. Fantasy owners should consider Forsett a nice backup option with upside, but not a guy to rely on in most leagues.

Update:
Forsett didn't make the final 53-man roster, so fantasy owners still drafting should avoid him at this time. It's possible he catches on elsewhere, so he may be worth a last-round flyer, but things aren't looking good for the 31-year-old.

BAL RB Justin Forsett - Week 11, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. St. Louis

Justin Forsett had only 53 yards on 14 carries against the Jaguars last week, adding another 11 yards on four receptions. Forsett continues to get a full workload, but he’s struggled along with the rest of the offense as the Ravens have fallen to a 2-7 record on the season.

This week, Forsett faces a Rams defense that has been much better against the pass this season than they’ve been against the run. St. Louis has given up over 109 yards per game on the ground this year and six touchdowns to opposing rushers. This isn’t a great matchup, but Forsett should get another full workload as the Ravens try to right the ship and he should be good enough for RB2 numbers in most leagues.

BAL RB Justin Forsett - Week 10, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Jacksonville

Justin Forsett only had 69 yards on 17 carries against the Chargers before the bye last week. While his production wasn’t what fantasy owners were looking for, the fact he got a full workload should ease any concerns. Forsett has been much better over the second quarter of the season than he was in the first quarter, and as long as he’s healthy, he should continue to be the main guy moving forward.

This week, Forsett will face a Jacksonville team that is actually leading the league in liminting rushing yards per attempt to opposing backs. However, they have allowed eight rushing touchdowns this season, and a lot of the carries they see are in garbage time, which might make the numbers a bit misleading. Expect Forsett to get a heavy workload and to put up excellent numbers against the Jags. He’s a top-10 running back in all fantasy formats this week.
