DEN TE Jeff Heuerman - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at New York Jets

In the first game since Jake Butt tore his ACL, Jeff Heuerman played in 53-of-60 offensive snaps last Monday versus the Chiefs. He was targeted seven times by Case Keenum and collected career-highs of four receptions and 57 yards, aided by a 36-yard snag on the Broncos' final possession. As the veteran TE on the roster, Heuerman will continue to be a part of the Denver passing game. He is more of a TE2 play at the Jets on Sunday.

DEN TE Jeff Heuerman - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Kansas City Chiefs

With Jake Butt out for the year with a torn ACL, Jeff Heuerman will now see the majority of the playing time. Through three games, he has just five receptions for 32 yards, but the Denver TE spot has combined to grab 13 passes for 117 yards on the season. Heuerman could be a sneaky pick up this week, especially facing a porous Kansas City defense on Monday night.

DEN TE Jeff Heuerman - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Heading in to his fourth professional season, there is little known about just how good Jeff Heuerman can be. In 26 career games, he has tallied just 18 receptions and scored twice. Case Keenum will likely utilize his TEs—either Heuerman or Jake Butt—for a few targets in the opener, but both players are fairly inexperienced and do not make for good fantasy options in Week 1.

DEN TE Jeff Heuerman - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

It’s been a fairly quiet career so far for Jeff Heuerman, but he showed signs of potential last season. Playing in a backup role, the fourth-year player caught a 54-yard TD at Indianapolis in December and finished with nine receptions and two scores. He has good size, at 6-foot-5, and has averaged an impressive 15.7 yards per grab during the past two years.

Fantasy Downside

The Broncos have big plans for second-year player Jake Butt, which means it could be another season of playing the backup role for Heuerman. Neither of the tight ends are known to be a great blocker, so whoever shows better ability there may see more playing time. In his three pro seasons, Heuerman has just 18 career grabs.

2018 Bottom Line

Expect to see a healthy competition during training camp and the preseason between Heuerman and Butt for the starting job. While neither is considered to be worthy of a fantasy roster spot heading into the regular season, that could change, depending on if one emerges and how often Case Keenum looks for his TE. Don’t bother selecting Heuerman, but he could be a sleeper midseason pickup.

DEN TE Jeff Heuerman - Week 16, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Kansas City
With both A.J. Derby and Virgil Green suffering concussions in the loss to the Patriots last week, Jeff Heuerman could receive lots of playing time at Kansas City on Christmas night. While the TEs combined for seven receptions last Sunday, there are better options for you to start than Heuerman.

DEN TE Jeff Heuerman - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
After missing his rookie season because of a torn ACL, Jeff Heuerman is anticipated to have a significant role in the Broncos offense this year. He’s a large target in the red zone at 6’ 5” and 255-pounds. Jeff was drafted in the third round of the ‘15 draft and is expected to be a dual-threat tight end.

Fantasy Downside
Virgil Green will likely be the main TE when only one TE is in the game, so Heuerman’s on-field time may be limited. With Marc Sanchez and Trevor Siemian at QB and in a run-first offense, even when he’s on the field, Jeff may not receive many targets.

Bottom Line
Last season the Broncos had only four TE TDs (three from the departed Owen Daniels) and that total may be high for ’16. While Heuerman has been considered the best receiver/blocker combination the Broncos have at tight end, that’s not enough for him to warrant taking up a fantasy roster spot out of the gate.
