CLE QB DeShone Kizer - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

After a preseason full of drama surrounding the Browns quarterback position, we finally know rookie DeShone Kizer will get the start in Week 1. Kizer had some big moments in the preseason, even if his overall stats don't look great.

He gets a tough Week 1 matchup against the Steelers, a defense that allowed the fifth-fewest fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks in 2016. The rookie will have some weapons to throw to, including 1,000-yard receiver Kenny Britt and former first-round pick Corey Coleman. But we don't expect a lot of production in his first game against a tough defense.

Kizer is on the lower tier of quarterbacks this week, and shouldn't be looked at in most leagues. Even in a 2QB format, he'd be a risky start.

CLE QB DeShone Kizer - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

DeShone Kizer was selected in the second round by the Browns this year and has a chance to earn the starting job. He's made an impression throughout training camp, and had an impressive first preseason game, completing 11-of-18 passes for 184 yards and 1 touchdown. He has a good arm and is able to make big plays down the field.

Fantasy Downside

He's a rookie, and he's on the Browns, a team that isn't exactly known for producing good quarterbacks. He also doesn't have a great receiving corps around him, and if the Browns can help it, they'd prefer to run the ball.

2017 Bottom Line

The simple fact Kizer isn't guaranteed the starting job means he's not worth taking in redraft leagues. He looks good so far, but camp and late-quarter minutes in preseason is different from actual game action. Even if he does get the starting job, he'd be ranked among the lower options of fantasy quarterbacks.
