Scouting report

HOU WR Cecil Shorts - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Carolina
In the season opener last Sunday, DeAndre Hopkins and Nate Washington combined for 15 grabs, while Cecil Shorts collected four receptions for 57 yards in his first game with the Texans. Houston fell behind the Chiefs early and ended up throwing the ball 47 times. While Hopkins will remain the top target in the passing game, look for Washington and Shorts to likely alternate as the No. 2 WR in stats each week. If your team has been bitten by the injury bug, Cecil should only be used as a WR3/flex play against a good Carolina defense.

HOU WR Cecil Shorts - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Kansas City
Playing in his first regular season game with the Texans, Cecil Shorts will see plenty of time in the slot against the Chiefs. Shorts has battled injuries since turning pro, but he can be an asset to QB Brian Hoyer and the Houston passing game if he stays healthy. However, look for Houston to continue to be a run-first offense, even without Arian Foster. Leave Cecil on your bench to start the year.

HOU WR Cecil Shorts - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Cecil Shorts spent the last four seasons in Jacksonville, where he was effective when healthy. Shorts dealt with hamstring issues most of last season and missed three games on his way to 53 catches for 557 yards and one touchdown. He was more productive during the 2012 and 2013 seasons and filled a variety of roles for Houston’s divisional rival during his four years with the Jaguars. As the Houston Chronicle notes, the 6-foot, 202-pounder can play inside or outside.

Fantasy Downside
With rookie Jaelen Strong a candidate to play outside as the team’s WR2 behind DeAndre Hopkins, Shorts’ role remains unclear.

Bottom Line
If Strong takes longer to develop than hoped, Shorts will be more than capable of handling that No. 2 role. But at this point, Shorts looks more like a waiver-wire fodder at best.

JAX WR Cecil Shorts - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Blake Bortles Week 17 vs. Texans
Cecil Shorts is dealing with a shoulder injury and had just two catches for 16 yards last week. He's had a largely forgettable season. None of the Jacksonville receivers can truly be trusted from week to week.

JAX WR Cecil Shorts - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Cecil Shorts Week 16 vs. Titans
If you're going to take a shot on a Jaguars receiver this week, Cecil Shorts might be the one. Shorts caught six passes for 76 yards last week and had a season-best 10 receptions and 103 yards in the previous meeting this season with Tennessee. But given the up-and-down nature of the Jags' passing game, do you trust anyone?

JAX WR Cecil Shorts - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Cecil Shorts Week 15 vs. Ravens
Despite seeing 10 passes thrown his way last week, Cecil Shorts managed just two catches for a measly three yards. He's had way more downs than ups this season as he and rookie QB Blake Bortles haven't always been on the same page. Baltimore's pass defense isn't very good, but the Jags might not be able to take advantage. I can't recommend Shorts this week.

JAX WR Cecil Shorts - Week 14, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Cecil Shorts Week 14 vs. Texans
Cecil Shorts managed just four receptions for 35 yards last week. But there's a chance for better things this week against Houston. The Texans have given up 17 touchdown catches to opposing wide receivers and have been susceptible to deep passes. Shorts hasn't done much the past couple of games, but could rebound in this one if Blake Bortles can get untracked.
