Scouting report

MIA K Caleb Sturgis - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Caleb Sturgis - Week 4 vs. Oakland Raiders
Caleb Sturgis had a strong opening week, but since then he's been just so-so. He's an average kicker and is a mediocre start this week against Oakland.

MIA K Caleb Sturgis - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Caleb Sturgis - Week 3 vs. Kansas City
Caleb Sturgis had a strong Week 1 when he made four field goal attempts, but he came back down to Earth in Week 2. He made just one field goal (34 yards) and one extra point. You could come up with worse options than Sturgis this week, but he certainly isn't the best.

MIA K Caleb Sturgis - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Caleb Sturgis - Week 2 vs. Buffalo
Caleb Sturgis ended up having a great Week 1. He was the fourth-highest scoring kicker as he knocked through four field goals and three extra points against New England. He wasn't tested too much as his longest field goal attempt was just 38 yards, but it's a promising performance. If the Dolphins continue to struggle to score touchdowns and settle for field goals, Sturgis could be in for a good year.

We should manage our expectations for Sturgis as he wasn't a great option in 2013, but he's worth keeping an eye on. For now he remains a decent option in Week 2 against Buffalo.

MIA K Caleb Sturgis - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Caleb Sturgis - Week 1 vs. New England
Miami Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis hasn't kicked much for an entire month due to a strained groin. He did play in the team's final preseason game, but missed his lone field goal attempt (56 yards). There are a lot of better options this week than a kicker recovering from a strained groin. Look elsewhere.

MIA K Caleb Sturgis - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

The second year kicker missed the first three games of the preseason due to a groin injury. He returned to practice before the Week 4 game and appears to be healthy again.

Even if he does return, he's not a great option at the kicker position. He hit just 76 percent of his field goal attempts as a rookie and made just 3-of-7 from 50-yards or more. He also ranked 23rd amongst extra point attempts.
