Scouting report

NYJ RB Bilal Powell - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Bilal Powell has had some success as a Jets running back. He has rushed for close to 1,500 yards the past two seasons. Powell also has been a weapon in the passing game throughout his career, (although it wasn't as evident last season with only 27 catches), but he should be the third-down back in 2018.

Fantasy Downside

Powell always has company in the backfield. It was Matt Forte the last couple seasons and this year Isaiah Crowell joins the Jets. Powell scored a career-high five rushing touchdowns last season, but scored only five total TDs in the previous three seasons. He isn't exactly a touchdown maker and won't be a goal-line option.

2018 Bottom Line

Powell actually has better value than most owners are giving him credit for, especially in PPR leagues. His ADP is 145, but he can be taken much earlier—like in the eighth or ninth round as an RB3 or flex option. He won't win your league for you but he is totally being undervalued in drafts.

NYJ RB Bilal Powell - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at New England Patriots

The Jets focused on their running game with Bryce Petty at quarterback last week and it paid off for Bilal Powell—19 carries for 145 yards and a score. It was the second straight game Powell scored a touchdown.

And with Matt Forte struggling with a bad knee, we expect Powell to get the majority of the touches in a tough matchup versus New England, who is ranked eighth in aFPA to running backs. Start Powell as an RB3 or in the FLEX slot this week.

NYJ RB Bilal Powell - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Bilal Powell ran the ball 13 times for 44 yards. He was only on the field for 32% of the snaps as Matt Forte and Elijah McGuire also played, basically creating a three-back rotation. Powell did help his owners out with his second rushing touchdown in the last three games, though.

Powell will face the Chargers this week, who are ranked 10th in aFPA to running backs. We expect the same workload for Powell, and since the touchdown was really the driving force of his fantasy success, we don't want to rely on it for his fantasy strength. Keep Powell on the bench.

NYJ RB Bilal Powell - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at New Orleans Saints

The Jets will probably rely on the running game this Sunday with backup QB Bryce Petty getting the start. Bilal Powell ran the ball 13 times for 35 yards last Sunday, but a bigger issue than the number of touches is that he is splitting them with veteran RB Matt Forte.

Powell will face the Saints this week, who are ranked 13th in aFPA to running backs. With a neutral matchup and the platoon with Forte, we don't expect much fantasy production from Powell. He might be able to help you in your playoffs as a low-end RB3 or FLEX in standard leagues, but that isn't saying much.

NYJ RB Bilal Powell - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Denver Broncos

Bilal Powell is healthy and productive, at least he was last week with 20 touches. His yardage numbers weren't great but he did score a touchdown. The more important part from a fantasy angle is that he's getting touches which will help produce numbers like when he was the No. 1 back.

Jets face the Broncos who are ranked 27th in aFPA to running backs. Even with the good matchup, the mitigating factor has been that Powell and teammate Matt Forte are really 1A and 1B at the position. Therefore, they are splitting fantasy stats. Keep Powell on the bench for that reason in Week 14.

NYJ RB Bilal Powell - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Bilal Powell had 10 touches which equaled the same amount as teammate Matt Forte. Forte was on the field for more snaps., but neither player put up any significant numbers last week.

Powell will face the Chiefs who are 12th in aFPA to running backs. It has been hard to predict the Jets running backs action week-to-week which makes it even harder to rank them.

For Week 13, Powell ranks slightly lower than Forte and probably should not be in your starting lineup against Kansas City.

NYJ RB Bilal Powell - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Carolina Panthers

With Matt Forte out, Bilal Powell should be the workhorse for the Jets, however, teammate Elijah McGuire was on the field for more snaps in the last game and actually had more touches (12 to 11). But we expect the veteran to get more touches this week against the Panthers.

Carolina has a very good defense as they are ranked second in aFPA to running backs. This should mean a tough fantasy day for Jets backs. Powell does have some value because of touches, but he only ranks as a high-end FLEX option or RB3 for Week 12.
