NYG QB Tyrod Taylor - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Tyrod Taylor had 133 yards, a touchdown, and a pick in relief of Tommy DeVito last week against the Eagles. Taylor is now expected to take over the starting job for the remainder of the season. This week, he faces a Rams defense that ranks 28th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. While it’s a nice matchup on paper and Taylor may have some streaming value in 2QB leagues, he’s too risky to trust in most formats. Walk away from the Giants’ passing game if possible.

NYG QB Tyrod Taylor - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Washington Commanders

Tyrod Taylor threw for a modest 200 yards on 36 pass attempts last week in a low-scoring gritty loss to the Bills. Taylor has always been a reasonably efficient player, and he adds some upside with ground production - five carries for 24 yards last week.

This week, Taylor faces a Washington defense that ranks 25th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. In a nice matchup, with some rushing upside, Taylor has some interesting streaming potential, but it’s hard to buy too much into this Giants offense right now, given how the season has gone. We have him ranked outside streaming territory, but he does have just enough rushing upside to warrant deep-league consideration if injuries and bye weeks have decimated your quarterback situation.

Week 13 vs Colts

Tyrod Taylor threw his first touchdowns since Week 2 against the Jets last week. But the Texans' offense is still lagging and Taylor can only do so much. He does still do pretty well on the ground, giving him an extra boost. He's rushed for at least 20 yards in his three games since returning from injury. He gets the Colts this week, who have been middle-of-the-pack against quarterbacks. Taylor has averaged 17 fantasy points over the last two games, so that feels like a good baseline for where Taylor will land this week.

Week 12 vs Jets

Somehow, Tyrod Taylor threw for just 107 yards and beat the AFC's current No. 1 seed Tennessee. Oh yeah, he also had those two rushing touchdowns. This week, he gets the free-falling Jets. Taylor actually looks like a sneaky good 2QB start this week against the fourth-worst defense against opposing quarterbacks.

Week 11 vs Titans

Tyrod Taylor returned to the lineup in Week 9, but the results remained the same for the Texans, as Taylor threw three interceptions against the Dolphins. And things don't get much easier, as Taylor and the Texans face the Titans in Week 11. Here's hoping you don't have to rely on Taylor, but good luck if you have to.

HOU QB Tyrod Taylor - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs Dolphins

Texans HC David Culley said Tyrod Taylor will start this week against the Dolphins as he returns to the lineup after missing six games. And Houston is probably so happy because the offense was very inept with David Mills under center. And what a time to come back, against one of the worst defenses in the league in Miami. Taylor immediately moves back into QB2 territory and, if you need a bye week fill-in, wouldn't be the worst option in the world.

HOU QB Tyrod Taylor - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Browns

Maybe Houston isn't so bad after all? Granted it was against the Jaguars, but Houston sure looked ready to prove doubters wrong in 2020, especially Tyrod Taylor, who had 291 yards and two touchdowns after what was a very strange and unfortunate 2020 season. When you have a playmaker like Brandin Cooks, it helps immensely. In Week 2, Taylor faces what should be an angry Browns team that had the Chiefs right where they wanted them and couldn't hang on. Week 2 will be the first true test for the new-look Houston Texans.

HOU QB Tyrod Taylor - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Jaguars

Tyrod Taylor was officially named the starting quarterback for the Texans, as expected. For now, at least. It's likely he'll eventually take a backseat to a rookie again, just like last year, though hopefully not because of a fluke injury. For now, Taylor gets his first NFL start since Week 1 last year with the Chargers, at least giving the Texans someone at quarterback for the time being. But the supporting cast just isn't very enticing at all, making Taylor a fringe QB2 against the Jaguars.

HOU QB Tyrod Taylor - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
It's possible the free-agent signing of Tyrod Taylor will be among the most important of the offseason. With last year's starter Deshaun Watson facing off-field issues and his stated intention of never playing for the Texans again, signing Taylor to an incentive-laden deal (at less than a $6 million base salary, Taylor will get solid backup money with upside if he ends up starting), the Texans have crafted an insurance policy for the game's most important position. If Houston is without Watson, they would at least have Taylor and his 47 games as an NFL starter as their fill-in signal-caller. Plus, Taylor worked with Houston's quarterbacks' coach/passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton with the Chargers last year, so there's some familiarity with the team's staff.

Fantasy Downside
While he would certainly be a serviceable option for Houston given the circumstances, with a less-than-dynamic supporting cast (beyond wideout Brandin Cooks, it's not a promising group at wideout), viewing Taylor as being of great fantasy interest would be a reach.

2021 Bottom Line
Again, serviceable is a word that comes to mind here. In 10 NFL seasons, Taylor has passed for 9,770 yards with 54 touchdowns and 20 interceptions and rushed for 1,850 yards and 16 touchdowns. With the chances of Watson's return -- at least his return and willingness to take the field for Houston -- seemingly minimal and with Davis Mills unlikely to be ready to assume the starting role without some developmental time, Taylor appears to be locked in as the most likely starter for the Texans this season.

LAC QB Tyrod Taylor - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
In a normal year, the Chargers would have gotten three months of offseason work with first-round draft choice Justin Herbert. This isn't a normal year. That's why head coach Anthony Lynn conceded the obvious as training camp opened: Herbert “can’t make up the physical reps” he missed due to the restricted offseason. So Tyrod Taylor will have a big advantage going into training camp. “He’ll probably be our Day 1 starter,” Lynn said on Jul. 29. This isn't a huge surprise. Lynn suggested the same in April. Lynn told Albert Breer of SI.com that Taylor remains in the No. 1 spot, but that he's not ruling out anything once the players get on the field. So Taylor almost certainly opens the season as starter. Beyond that? As ESPN's Matthew Berry noted, the Chargers have some very nice pass-catching weapons (Keenan Allen, Hunter Henry, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler, for starters) and we all know Taylor can run.

Fantasy Downside
Taylor will be a fantasy factor for as long as he has the job, but how long will that be? As Profootballtalk.com suggested, the circumstances of this offseason may work against Herbert’s chances of pushing Taylor aside at any point in the near future, but the Chargers didn’t use such a high pick on a player they think is incapable of handling the job.

2020 Bottom Line
Given the seemingly tenuous grip on the job, Taylor ranks at the bottom of the list of likely Week 1 NFL starters for the very reason in the "Downside" above.
