JAX TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Kansas City Chiefs

Even with Blake Bortles completing 29 passes for over 375 yards last Sunday in the blowout of the Jets, Austin Seferian-Jenkins caught only two passes for 24 yards. It broke his string of three straight games with exactly three grabs to start the season. While the Chiefs pass defense hasn’t been able to slow down anyone yet, Seferian-Jenkins is, at best, a TE2 option.

Week 4 vs. New York Jets

With Blake Bortles throwing for just 155 yards last Sunday versus the Titans, Austin Seferian-Jenkins saw five targets, leading to three catches for 18 yards. The consistency with the Jaguars TE continued, as he has seen exactly five looks every game this season, resulting in three grabs in each contest. Seferian-Jenkins' nine receptions have totaled 66 yards and a Week 2 score. He should only be used as a TE2 option versus a pretty good Jets pass defense this week.

Week 3 vs. Tennessee Titans

Even though Austin Seferian-Jenkins caught only three passes (all in the first half) last Sunday in the home win over the Patriots, one of them was a four-yard TD just before intermission. In the first two games, his numbers have been almost identical: Five targets, three receptions and between 23-25 yards. With Fournette back in the lineup this week, Seferian-Jenkins is a TE2 play.

Week 2 vs. New England Patriots

With the Jaguars defense and ground game controlling the game against the Giants in Week 1, Austin Seferian-Jenkins saw five targets, resulting in three receptions for 25 yards. Blake Bortles completed only 18 passes in the win but could have a bigger role versus the Patriots on Sunday if the running game has issues due to Leonard Fournette's injured hamstring. Houston tight ends totaled 38 receiving yards versus New England last week, so don’t expect a big game from Seferian-Jenkins.

JAX TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at New York Giants

After a couple of unproductive seasons with the Bucs, Austin Seferian-Jenkins had a solid 2017 with the Jets, snagging 50 passes for 357 yards and 3 TDs. He’ll be Jacksonville’s No. 1 TE this season, but the Jaguars' mostly conservative playcalling may limit his numbers. With Blake Bortles at QB, you should look elsewhere for your starter.

Fantasy Upside

The Jaguars signed Seferian-Jenkins to a two-year, $10 million contract during free agency this offseason, beating out the Saints and Seahawks, who also showed interest in signing the No. 38 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Last year, Seferian-Jenkins turned his career around with the Jets, posting career-highs in receptions (50) and receiving yards (357) after battling alcoholism issues early in his career with the Buccaneers. Although "ASJ" isn't much of a threat with the ball in his hands, he can move the chains as a possession receiver and has the size and athleticism to help Blake Bortles as a red-zone weapon. Worth noting: The Jaguars, who reportedly wanted to take a tight end in April's draft, ultimately passed on the position.

Fantasy Downside

Seferian-Jenkins has never been a consistent producer and the Jaguars haven't leaned heavily on the tight end position in recent years.

2018 Bottom Line

As Bleacher Report noted, upon closer review, Seferian-Jenkins' upside was apparent last season: He finished with only three touchdown receptions, but he caught two other touchdowns that were reversed upon review—and both were fantastic plays. So yes; ASJ is a viable fantasy TE2. But nobody should expect high-end, week-to-week production.

NYJ TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at New England Patriots

Austin Seferian-Jenkins was targeted 8 times last week and it produced 4 receptions for only 21 yards. Seferian-Jenkins has not been effective the last five weeks and he hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 7.

The Jets passing game isn't nearly as good since Josh McCown went down. Keep him on the bench for Week 17.

NYJ TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Austin Seferian-Jenkins' stock has dropped for two reasons: his production has been poor and the Jets offense struggles with Bryce Petty under center. Seferian-Jenkins has recorded 5 catches for 21 yards over the last three games.

There's no reason to start him this week against the Chargers, who are ranked12th in aFPA to tight ends. Keep him on the bench for Week 16.

NYJ TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at New Orleans Saints

Austin Seferian-Jenkins has only 5 receptions over the last four games including last week where he caught 1 ball for 1 yard. It looked like for awhile Seferian-Jenkins could help fantasy owners, but now he is pretty much a waiver wire guy. His stock has dropped to where he doesn't even rank as a TE2 and that is not likely to change with the Jets having to go to backup quarterback Bryce Petty. Find a new tight end for depth on your fantasy squad.

NYJ TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Denver Broncos

While the Jets receivers have been red hot, Austin Seferian-Jenkins has been relatively quiet with only 4 catches for 34 yards in the last two games. That might change this Sunday at Mile High.

The Jets play the Broncos, who are very good against opposing wide receivers but have struggled against tight ends, ranking 28th in aFPA vs. TEs. That might mean QB Josh McCown leans on Seferian-Jenkins more in Week 14. Start him as a low-end TE1.
