Scouting report

JAX TE Dan Arnold - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Atlanta Falcons
Dan Arnold did not see a target in Week 11 against San Francisco. While last week's result was discouraging, it would appear to be an aberration rather than something that should be a consistent issue as Arnold hadn't seen fewer than five targets in a game since Week 4 before last week's dud. Look for Arnold to bounce back with his usual volume in a good matchup against Atlanta in Week 12. It may be tough to stomach starting Arnold after he posted a 0, but he should see enough looks to be a borderline streamer in single TE leagues moving forward.

JAX TE Dan Arnold - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. San Francisco 49ers
Dan Arnold logged a 5-67-0 performance in Week 10 as he continues to carve out a defined role in the Jacksonville offense. He will always struggle with touchdown production playing with Trevor Lawrence and a dysfunctional passing game, but Arnold's volume alone has him on the streaming radar at fantasy's weakest position. Arnold now has 60+ yards receiving in three straight games and can be started if you're desperate for TE help. The 49ers' defense is near the middle of the pack when it comes to defending TEs. Arnold is a streaming TE1 option in Week 11 and is an interesting play in TE premium leagues.

JAX TE Dan Arnold - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Indianapolis Colts
Dan Arnold has 7+ targets in three of his last four games and posted 60+ receiving yards in all three of those performances. While those numbers don't jump off the page, in the desolate wasteland that is the low-end TE1 and high-end TE2 range, those kinds of performances are worthy of attention in fantasy circles. Arnold's profile isn't overly exciting, but he has carved out enough of a role and rapport with Trevor Lawrence that he can be seen as a viable streaming option in good matchups. A Week 10 game against the Colts is one where Arnold can be considered if you're struggling to fill the TE slot.

JAX TE Dan Arnold - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Buffalo Bills
Dan Arnold managed an 8-68-0 line on 10 targets line against the Seahawks last week. The 10 targets alone are enough to warrant attention at the TE position, and Arnold now has six catches in two of the last three games and 23 total targets over that span. That kind of volume deserves consideration in fantasy regardless of the opponent. That being said, the Bills rank second in adjusted fantasy points allowed to TEs and there is a real possibility the Jags offense simply faceplants this Sunday. However, Arnold is seeing enough volume to warrant consideration as a TE2 or streamer given the state of his position for fantasy purposes.

CAR TE Dan Arnold - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Dan Arnold settled into a nice role with the Cardinals last season with a modest 31 catches, 438 yards and four touchdowns. He now joins a Panthers offense with an open spot at the position and has said to local reporters that he joined Carolina expected a large role in the passing game. Arnold was quietly TE13 over the second half of last season and is getting very little interest in draft circles. His current ADP is TE36 and he’s available in the late 23rd round – so essentially free. Most importantly, his new quarterback is named Sam Darnold. So we’ll get Darnold throwing to D. Arnold. That has to count for something.

Fantasy Downside

The Panthers have a lot of receiving options, including Christian McCaffrey coming out of the backfield, so there may not be enough volume for Arnold to put up fantasy points. Also, he gets a pretty big downgrade at quarterback going from Kyler Murray to Darnold, even if Darnold shows massive improvement over his Jets days. Arnold also has to contend with holdover Ian Thomas and rookie Tommy Tremble for tight end snaps, although Thomas and Tremble both profile more as blockers than receivers. With Arnold, it’s the opposite.

2021 Bottom Line

Arnold is worth a dart throw in any league where drafters are taking three tight ends. He’s available at the very end of all drafts and has TE1 upside. Every year, we hope for some low-profile tight ends to rise to the top, so if you can’t snag a good one early on, and decide three late guys are the answer, Arnold is worth being the third of those three.

ARI TE Dan Arnold - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Los Angeles Rams

Dan Arnold had three catches on five targets last week. Those aren’t great numbers by any means, but his five targets in two straight games and four touchdowns over his past six are meaningful on a team that has not featured the tight end for years. Arnold is too risky to start in any leagues, but he’s still an interesting dynasty addition on deep rosters. If the Cardinals don’t add anyone, Arnold could continue to develop and he’s only 25 years old.

ARI TE Dan Arnold - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. San Francisco 49ers

Dan Arnold had another reasonably good day by tight end standards last week against the Eagles, catching three balls for 54 yards on five targets. Arnold has increased his production as the season has progressed, and while his targets are still limited – averaging just 3.4 targets over his five-game stretch of fantasy relevance – he’s found a way to make the most of those targets. He’s had four touchdowns in the past five games.

This week, Arnold faces a 49ers defense that ranks fourth in aFPA to opposing tight ends. In a better matchup, in a different week, maybe you gamble on Arnold. In a tough matchup, during the championship, hopefully, you have better options available.

Side Note: If you’re playing dynasty and you have an open roster spot, Arnold might be worth grabbing. If the Cardinals don’t add anyone else in the offseason, it’s worth the roster spot to see if he can keep up the production. His name isn’t yet on the tongues of most fantasy owners.
