NYG TE Will Tye - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Will Tye had a strong finish to 2015 with three touchdowns in his final four games. He also knows the offense, which might give him a leg up on rookie Evan Engram, at least early in the season. Tye has a worker’s mentality and fights hard to get off the line and find soft spots in the defense. He has above-average hands for his position and is a good route runner.

Fantasy Downside

Tye failed to assert himself last year, despite having every opportunity to seize the starting role and run with it. He wound up with only 395 yards and 1 touchdown, despite the Giants desperately needing a TE on the roster to step up. This year, he’ll be vying with rookie first-rounder Evan Engram, who was an accomplished receiver in college and should be a playmaker at the next level. The addition of Brandon Marshall on the outside further limits the targets that Tye will have coming his way.

2017 Bottom Line

Tye was supposed to be a value pick last year, but he failed to meet expectations as a viable fantasy TE. With Engram the future at the position, it’s unlikely Tye makes a difference this year, and fantasy owners should leave him on waivers to start the season.

NYG TE Will Tye - Week 18, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Wild Card Round at Green Bay
Will Tye had four catches for 47 yards against Washington last week as the Giants finished the season with their 11th win. Tye has been largely disappointing as a starter this year though, despite being on the field for 74% of the team’s offensive snaps over the second half of the season. He finished the year with only 395 yards and a single touchdown on 48 receptions.

In the wildcard round, Tye will face a Green Bay defense that was very average against the TE position this year, allowing five touchdowns to TEs during the regular season. Green Bay ranks bottom five in the league in total passing defense, but with how bad Tye has been this year for fantasy owners, it’s hard to trust him this week. We have him sixth out of eight starting TEs, making him a lower end option.

Week 13 vs. Pittsburgh

Will Tye had only two catches for 12 yards last week against the Browns, which was very disappointing considering the matchup. Tye is the unquestioned starter at the TE position for the Giants, but he has yet to put up big fantasy numbers in that role this season. Until that changes, there should be better waiver opportunities than Tye in most leagues and he should be left on the bench regardless of the matchup.

NYG TE Will Tye - Week 12, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Cleveland

Will Tye only had a pair of catches for 12 yards last week against the Bears, but he managed to score a touchdown and was targeted five times. He’s on the field for over 70% of the team’s offensive snaps since Larry Donnell stopped getting playing time, which makes him streamable in good matchups.

This week classifies as a good matchup. The Browns have given up the most passing touchdowns to opposing offenses this season, and the most fantasy points to the TE position this year. Tye is risky because of the inconsistency of the New York offense, but if you need to gamble on a TE this week to stream, you could do worse than Tye.

NYG TE Will Tye - Week 11, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Chicago

Will Tye caught five of the eight balls thrown his way last week for 53 yards. It’s a very positive sign that he’s seen the field for over 70% of the team’s offensive snaps for two straight games now, although rookie Jerell Adams is getting some looks as well. Tye was a borderline starter a year ago when he got these kinds of targets.

This week probably isn’t the best time to use him, although the Bears don’t look great with a 2-7 record. Chicago quietly has only allowed three touchdowns to the TE position and ranks in the top half of the league against the pass. Tye should get targets, so he has some upside, but it might be best to wait until he has a better matchup before you trust him. If you’re desperate, he’s a reasonable waiver pick up though with the number of looks he’s getting now.

NYG TE Will Tye - Week 10, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Cincinnati

Will Tye had four catches for 33 yards last week against the Eagles, but he was targeted seven times – second most on the team – and was on the field for 72% of the team’s offensive snaps. That’s a good sign for fantasy owners looking for a streaming option this week, as it seems like Larry Donnell might finally be out of the picture.

He’s a sneaky fantasy option this week if you need to grab a TE off waivers. Don’t forgo a more consistent option for him, but if you need to grab a guy to start this week, Tye will be facing a Bengals defense that has allowed five touchdowns to the TE position this season. Tye should be used heavily in a game that could be a blowout.

NYG TE Will Tye - Week 6, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Baltimore
Will Tye had only two catches for 37 yards last week, which was disappointing since Larry Donnell was out. As the starter, Tye was expected to do more against the Packers. He should get the start again this week against Baltimore, but whether Donnell is active or not, it’s too risky to bank on Tye to be a solid TE option. TE is pretty streamable and there should be better options than Tye available on the waiver wire in most leagues.
