HOU QB Tom Savage - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

With Brock Osweiler out of the picture and rookie Deshaun Watson still finding his way, Tom Savage will be the Texans’ starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. Savage is in his fourth season but has only thrown 92 regular season passes. He does have a solid wide receiver in DeAndre Hopkins, but the Houston offense will feature a lot of Lamar Miller and the ground game. You’re better off starting another signal-caller over Savage this week.

HOU QB Tom Savage - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Houston Texans CB Johnathan Joseph has watched Tom Savage for three seasons and believes the fourth-year QB is ready for his opportunity to become the starter in Houston. "He has all the physical talent, all the tools to be a starting quarterback in this league," Joseph said of Savage. Of course, Brock Osweiler's surprising trade to the Browns cleared the way for Savage to move in as the starter. The good news? Although still unproven, Savage is incredibly cheap right now, even as a backup. He'll make just $765,000 in 2017, as he enters the final season of his four-year contract. If Savage impresses enough as the starter, he'll be a cheap enough option this season, and the team can work out a new deal next offseason.

Fantasy Downside

The Texans drafted DeShaun Watson in the first round of April's draft.

2017 Bottom Line

Savage is still expected to be the initial starter, but you'll want to verify this before you invest. More likely, we'll all be hoping whichever player ultimately lands the job doesn't hurt the value of DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller and C.J. Fiedorowicz.

HOU QB Tom Savage - Week 17, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Tennessee
Making his first start of the season last Saturday night against the Bengals, Tom Savage threw for only 176 yards, but was efficient at leading his team to a win and division championship. He was sacked four times, but completed 62 percent of his passes, doing just enough to keep his team in the game. In the early October win over the Titans, Brock Osweiler threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns versus the No. 31 defense against the pass, but Savage should not be started.

HOU QB Tom Savage - Week 16, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Cincinnati
Once Brock Osweiler was benched in the second quarter last week, Tom Savage led the Texans to a come-from-behind, much-needed win versus the Jags. He went 23-of-36 for 260 yards, including resurrecting DeAndre Hopkins, who had eight total catches. Savage will be Houston’s QB on Saturday against a Bengals defense the yields 241 passing yards per game. However, he should not be in your starting lineup.

HOU QB Tom Savage - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Texans drafted Tom Savage at No. 135, their fourth-round compensatory pick. New HC Bill O'Brien, who worked out Savage during his March 3 Pro Day, liked what he saw in the quarterback with a big, accurate arm who showed he was smart and articulate in the interview process. "What stood out to us was during the process, when we watched his tape, obviously we felt like he was a guy that was an accurate passer," O'Brien said. "We felt like he was a guy that stood in the pocket and took some hits and delivered the football." Savage started 13 games last season, finishing with the fifth-best passing performance (2,958 yards) in Pitt history. As the season progressed, Savage's understanding of the game improved and he threw just three interceptions in the final nine games.

Fantasy Downside
New coaching staff on a rebuilding team -- not the ideal situation for a rookie to be thrust into action if the circumstances dictate such a move.

Bottom Line
In Houston, Savage will benefit from working with a seasoned veteran in Ryan Fitzpatrick, the likely starter this season. But with Fitzpatrick's past inconsistencies (and with Case Keenum a far from proven commodity), Savage could be in line for some rookie starts.

Update
The Texans acquired QB Ryan Mallett from New England on 8/31 and released Case Keenum. Mallett, who is familar with HC Bill O'Brien and his scheme, will almost certainly move into the No. 2 role behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and ahead of Savage -- at least early on.
