BAL RB Terrance West - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Oakland Raiders

Terrance West had only 4 carries and ended up with negative-7 yards against the Steelers last week, and he looks like he’s losing his job. Passing downs are going to Javorius Allen, and two-down work looks like it’s going to Alex Collins. West is borderline droppable and shouldn’t be in anyone’s lineup this week.

Week 4 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Terrance West had only 6 carries for 26 yards last week against the Jaguars, and he was out-touched by Alex Collins in a forgettable defeat. West has been losing ground to Javorius Allen since Danny Woodhead went down in Week 1, and now with Collins cutting into his workload, he’s not trustworthy to be in your lineup in any league format.

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Jacksonville Jaguars (game in London)

Terrance West is a little banged up and is coming off an 8-carry, 22-yards, and 1-touchdown performance against the Browns. Encouraging were his 2 receptions for 23 yards, but discouraging was the fact Javorius Allen led the team in rushing attempts with 14.

This week, West may be hobbled and will at least be relegated to two-down work with Allen assuming the bulk of the touches. Owners should shelve West until we get a clearer picture of how the workload will be divided up, despite a nice matchup against the Jaguars.

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Cleveland Browns

The Ravens fed Terrance West in Week 1 against the Bengals. He averaged a respectable 4.2 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown. West should put up similar stat lines throughout the season, offering quality two-down numbers with goal-line work, while offering little in the passing game.

This week, West should have another good game against the Browns. While Cleveland held Pittsburgh’s running game in check last week, only the 49ers gave up more rushing yards than the Browns last season. If the Ravens can get out in front of the Browns, like they did against the Bengals, then West should approach 20 carries again, giving him low-end RB2 potential, especially in standard leagues.

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Terrance West comes out of the preseason as the lead back in Baltimore. The fourth-year back out of Towson is a powerful, between-the-tackles runner who should get plenty of touches on first and second down to start the season. He’ll face the division-rival Bengals, and while Danny Woodhead will likely be active in the passing game, the release of Lorenzo Taliaferro means West could assume primary goal-line duties.

The Bengals gave up 4.4 yards per carry on the ground to running backs last season, 23rd in the league. West had limited success against them, averaging only 3.7 yards on 18 carries over two games. West is likely to get more touches against them this week as the lead back, but his upside is limited to two-down work, making him a fringe RB3/Flex option in most league formats.

Fantasy Upside

Terrance West led the Ravens in rushing last season with 193 carries and 774 yards. He also caught 34 passes, despite having a reputation for stone hands. West ended up with 1,010 yards from scrimmage and 6 total touchdowns, which made him a viable RB2, especially early in the season before Kenneth Dixon ate into his snaps. The opportunity should be there for West to continue to get at least a dozen touches per game as a two-down runner, especially with Dixon ruled out for the season.

Fantasy Downside

West’s activity in the passing game may decline with Danny Woodhead's arrival as a free agent. Woodhead will also take some carries away from West, as he’s proven to be a capable runner in complementary roles. Last year, West was inconsistent hitting the hole and often failed to grind out yards like a back with his size and power should do.

2017 Bottom Line

West is an interesting option because of the opportunity in front of him. The Ravens are dying for reliability at the running back position, and with Dixon out for the season, West will get every chance to be the No. 1 back. With a small price tag, he’s worth grabbing as a spot-starter RB2 type of player, although he’s less valuable in PPR formats.

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 17, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Cincinnati

Terrance West had 13 touches last week against the Steelers, including three receptions, and finished with a total of 55 yards. West continues to share time with rookie Kenneth Dixon, which hurts his upside as a viable fantasy option week-to-week.

This week West will face a Bengals run defense that ranks 22nd in the league in yards allowed, but with only a dozen or so touches expected for each Baltimore back, it’s hard to get too excited about him. In deep leagues, he has some low-end RB3 potential, especially since he leads the team with five rushing touchdowns this year, but in most leagues the Baltimore backfield should be avoided.
