Scouting report

SD WR Stevie Johnson - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Chargers’ receiving corps looked fresh and revamped heading into training camp. But that changed when Stevie Johnson was injured.

Fantasy Downside
Johnson had to be helped off the field after suffering a non-contact injury to his right leg in an early training camp practice.

2016 Bottom Line
With Johnson out for the season, Dontrelle Inman could see more opportunities alongside Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin when the team goes with three wideouts. The team signed veteran free-agent James Jones to add depth. Jones, who had 50-catch season with the Packers last season, may have lost a step at 32, but the Chargers are apparently comfortable using him in a limited role in 2016.

SD WR Stevie Johnson - Week 13, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs Broncos
Stevie Johnson did put up some WR1-like numbers last week, catching seven passes for 92 yards and a TD. It was his first TD since Week 2 and was his third of the season. It was a season-high for yards and tied a season-high with 10 targets.

Any momentum gained last week could fade a little this week as the Bolts take on the Broncos who are the top team in allowing fantasy points to WRs. It could be a very tough go in the passing game this week for SD. As a result, Johnson falls in our rankings to more of a WR3 option this week. He does have at least two pretty favorable matchups coming up in Weeks 14 and 15.

SD WR Stevie Johnson - Week 12, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Jacksonville
Stevie Johnson caught seven balls for 54 yards last week on eight targets. It was a favorable matchup for Johnson owners who were counting on more as Johnson slid into the team's WR1 role. But that wasn't the case and the entire offense threw out a clunker last week. Johnson will likely be Philip Rivers' top WR target, but comes in at 24th in our rankings, making him a lower-end WR2 option. The Jags are actually pretty good against WRs and are eighth in allowing fantasy points to the position. Johnson is probably best played as a WR3 option this week.

SD WR Stevie Johnson - Week 11, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs Kansas City
With Keenan Allen out for the year, Stevie Johnson collected 10 targets and seven catches when we last saw the Chargers in action back in Week 9 against the Bears. But Johnson only turned those numbers into 68 receiving yards. Johnson is now the team's default WR1 but it's hard to imagine him putting up those kind of numbers week-to-week. This week, it's a great matchup as the Chiefs are 32nd in allowing fantasy points to WRs. But Johnson is only ranked as a lower-end WR2/higher-end WR3 this week. With Antonio Gates remaining banged up, Johnson has a good chance to be a red zone target, certainly making him an interesting play.

SD WR Stevie Johnson - Week 9, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Chicago
Stevie Johnson had just two catches for 28 yards last week on four targets. Those are his lowest totals of 2015 to this point. With Keenan Allen now out for the year, Johnson pretty much becomes the team's WR1 option, at least from a fantasy standpoint. He likely gives way in the red zone to Antonio Gates, but Johnson should see a bump in production the rest of the way in what has turned into a pass-heavy offense. This week, he jumps to low-end WR2 value coming in at 22nd on our list. It's a great matchup as the Bears tend to get lit up against the pass.

SD WR Stevie Johnson - Week 8, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Baltimore
Stevie Johnson returned last week and caught four balls for 50 yards, which has pretty much been his average production this season. Over his last two games, he's been targeted eight times each game. The Bolts had to play from behind last week, so Johnson got his share of looks. And this week it's a great matchup as the Ravens are 31st in allowing fantasy points to WRs. Johnson is going to have his up and down games as the team's WR3, but his chances of being more fantasy productive are a little better if Antonio Gates can't play this week.

SD WR Stevie Johnson - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs Cleveland
Stevie Johnson caught three balls for 46 yards last week on five targets in Week 3, and for the first time this season, he didn't haul in a TD reception. He's averaged just under six targets a game so far this year and still makes for a low end WR2 or high end WR3 play this week. But, he comes with consistency risks, he gets a tough matchup against the Browns who are ninth in allowing fantasy points to WRs. Cleveland is much weaker against the run, so that may be more of an attack for San Deigo this week.
