DET RB Paul Perkins - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Dallas Cowboys
Paul Perkins has been receiving a handful of touches the past few weeks, but not enough for fantasy owners to get too excited. If Ty Johnson is unable to play on Sunday due to his concussion last week, Perkins would be in line for a bigger role, especially in the ground attack. Dallas has an average run defense so Perkins could make for a sneaky start.

NYG RB Paul Perkins - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Paul Perkins had 9 carries and 2 receptions for only 30 total yards last week against the Eagles. Perkins is averaging 2.1 yards per carry so far this season and he’s losing touches to Orleans Darkwa. He’s borderline droppable right now and should not be in anyone’s lineup.

NYG RB Paul Perkins - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Philadelphia Eagles

Paul Perkins is averaging a woeful 1.9 yards on 14 carries through two games this season, and he’s being outperformed in limited duty by his backup, Orleans Darkwa. He had only 10 yards on 7 carries against the Lions on Monday night, and his offensive line might be the worst in football.

For the moment, Perkins should only be considered as an end-of-the-bench stash option in case he starts logging a dozen or more touches per game. He’s starting to look like a guy who will lose his job and definitely shouldn’t be active in any leagues.

NYG RB Paul Perkins - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Detroit Lions

Paul Perkins averaged a measly 2.3 yards per carry on 7 rushing attempts Sunday against the Cowboys, as the Giants were outmatched in a 19-3 loss. Perkins was targeted 3 times in the passing game, which was good to see, but he only caught 2 balls for 9 yards and turned in a miserable overall performance.

This week, Perkins will face a Lions team that held the Cardinals running game in check last week and it’s unlikely he’ll have a big game. He’s worth keeping on your roster, as he’s still technically the starting running back, but with a bad offensive line and limited early production, it’s hard to trust him in any league format.

NYG RB Paul Perkins - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Dallas Cowboys

At the end of last season, Perkins got double-digit touches in four straight games and showed flashes of ability as a lead back. He really struggled in the playoff loss to Green Bay, though, averaging only 3.0 yards on 10 carries. He may have a short leash this season.

Against Dallas this week, expect Perkins to be given every opportunity to earn his starting job. He won’t get every-down work with Shane Vereen around to catch passes, which limits his upside. And the Cowboys were one of the top run defending teams last season. While he should be on your roster, it’s hard to trust him as more than a low-end RB2 or flex option in large leagues this week.

NYG RB Paul Perkins - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Paul Perkins should have every opportunity to seize the starting job for the Giants this year. Rashad Jennings wasn’t retained, and he showed enough potential last season to keep the Giants from investing heavily in a running back upgrade this offseason. Perkins rushed for 102 yards on 21 carries in his last game of the regular season, and the Giants are hoping he can provide stability at the position.

Fantasy Downside

Perkins will be limited to a two-down role with Shane Vereen back from injury, and he’ll have less value in PPR formats. He only caught 15 passes last season, and Vereen is a much more accomplished receiver out of the backfield. Additionally, Perkins looked very average in his role last year, failing to score a touchdown, despite touching the ball 127 times. Perkins will get the first opportunity to win the job, but rookie Wayne Gallman and veterans Orleans Darkwa and Shaun Draughn will be ready to step in if he falters.

2017 Bottom Line

Perkins has value because of his potential to get 10-15 carries per game this year. The Giants have a potent passing attack that should keep safeties out of the box. Without Jennings around, the job is Perkins’ to lose. His job security is too shaky to invest an early pick on him, but he should be considered a nice risk/reward option in the middle rounds. His round nine price tag is reasonable in 10-team leagues, considering his upside.

NYG RB Paul Perkins - Week 18, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Wild Card Round at Green Bay
Paul Perkins finished the season on a high note. He had double digit carries in his last four games, including a 21-carry, 102 yards performance in Week 17 against Washington. He averaged a respectable 4.37 yards per carry over that stretch, and his snap count increased to nearly 40% over the second half of the season.

Perkins has some upside this week as rumors out of New York indicate he’ll continue to see a large share of carries. However, the Packers have been pretty good against the run this year, with top-15 rankings in yards, yards per attempt, and touchdowns allowed to opposing runners. This game could also feature a lot of passing, hurting Perkins’ chances at a full workload. Of the available starting RBs this week, we have Perkins as a low-end option.
