DEN RB Montee Ball - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Montee Ball was the Broncos second-round draft pick of 2013 and still has a lot of good football left in him. As a change-of-pace back during his rookie campaign, he averaged 4.7 yards per carry on 120 attempts with four scores. He was Denver’s starter for the first four weeks of ’14, running for 172 yards and a TD. He is fully recovered after an injury-plagued second campaign.

Fantasy Downside
Last year was supposed to be Montee’s opportunity to take over the starting RB position, but after an appendectomy before the season, he never was able to get going. He sustained a groin injury in Week 5 and returned for four snaps in Week 11 before tearing his groin and finishing the season on I.R. Over the season he averaged just 3.1 YPC and had a tough time finding the wholes with any regularity. New HC Gary Kubiak likes to feature one back, which could limit Ball’s playing time.

Bottom Line
With the emergence of Ronnie Hillman in preseason, Ball will likely be losing playing time once the regular season starts. C.J. Anderson, who is a better fit in Kubiak’s one-cut zone scheme, will start. Montee should only be drafted as a handcuff or in the later rounds; but, even in the Broncos balanced attack, right now he does not carry a lot of fantasy value heading into the regular season. That said, there is a lot of upside in the Broncos offense if Anderson were to go down.

DEN RB Montee Ball - Week 11, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 – Montee Ball vs. St. Louis Rams
Montee Ball should be back on the field this week after missing the last five weeks with a sore groin. Montee has shed some pounds and feels he’ll be able to hit the holes quicker. Even with Ronnie Hillman out and facing a Rams team that has struggled at stopping the run, be cautious about starting Ball, as it may be better to monitor how he’s used in what is a still a crowded Denver backfield, especially with last week's emergence of C.J. Anderson.

DEN RB Montee Ball - Week 10, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 – Monte Ball vs. Oakland Raiders
After missing the past month with a groin injury, Montee Ball returned to practice this week and should see some playing time in Oakland. However, Ronnie Hillman is now the Broncos starter, so Montee will have to prove himself to the coaching staff, as he's averaging just 3.1 yards per carry. Ball has lost over 10 pounds since he last played and feels he'll be able to hit the holes quicker. Don't start the former Wisconsin Badger RB this week, but definitely monitor his role in what is now a crowded Denver backfield.

DEN RB Montee Ball - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Montee Ball vs. Arizona Cardinals
In the loss to the Seahawks two weeks ago, Montee Ball fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and had a rough go of it against the solid Seattle defense. Ball finished with just 38 yards on 14 carries. Montee has been a bit of a disappointment through the first three games of the season, averaging only 55 yards on the ground with one TD. Arizona has limited opponents to just 72 rushing yards per game, so things could remain a struggle for Ball on Sunday.

DEN RB Montee Ball - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Montee Ball vs. Seattle Seahawks
In the win over Kansas City last week, the Broncos offense was on the field for less than 24 minutes. Montee Ball led the Denver rushing attack with 60 yards, but had only 12 carries. He also added 29 yards on three receptions. The Broncos had all kinds of trouble moving the ball on Seattle last February, however the Chargers were able to total 377 yards and score 30 points last Sunday. Playing at Seattle will be a challenge, so don’t expect a big game from Montee.

DEN RB Montee Ball - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Montee Ball vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Versus a pretty good Colts defense, Montee Ball carried the rock 23 times but for only 67 yards. His first carry of the season went for 15 yards, but Indy did a good job of controlling him after that. Montee scored on a fourth quarter three-yard run and had 23 of the team’s 28 legitimate rushing attempts (not counting Peyton Manning kneel downs). Ball had his best game as a pro last season versus Kansas City, rushing for 117 yards on only 13 carries. Even with Ronnie Hillman back, Ball will get most of the carries and will be facing a Chiefs defense that allowed 162 yards on the ground to the Titans in the opener.

DEN RB Montee Ball - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Montee Ball vs. Indianapolis Colts
After missing much of the preseason due to an appendectomy, Montee Ball will be in the starting lineup on Sunday night. The second-year pro will be the Broncos No. 1 RB, but the Broncos may ease him in a bit during the opener, meaning Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson should see some meaningful action. Montee scored four times last season and has a good chance at finding the end zone in this one, as Denver should be able to move the ball on the Colts.
