Scouting report

CAR RB Miles Sanders - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Indianapolis Colts

Miles Sanders was limited to just two carries last week against the Texans, while he watched Chuba Hubbard get 15 carries and a pair of targets. Even Raheem Blackshear had five touches. We’ll see how much that was health-related, as he went into the bye week injured, but it seems like he’s lost his job to Hubbard. Even in a great matchup against the Colts, it’s hard to trust Sanders until we see more work head his way. Bench him for now.

CAR RB Miles Sanders - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Houston Texans

Miles Sanders missed the Dolphins game before the bye last week with a nagging shoulder injury. He hasn’t been particularly effective when he’s played this season, averaging just 3.1 yards per carry and scoring a single touchdown in five starts. Sanders will continue to get pushed by Chuba Hubbard, who looked pretty good starting against Miami.

This week, if he’s healthy, Sanders faces a Houston defense that ranks 25th in aFPA to opposing running backs. If Sanders plays, he’s likely going to be in a committee with Hubbard, making it hard to trust either of them as more than low-end flex options. Take a wait-and-see approach with Sanders this week.

CAR RB Miles Sanders - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Miami Dolphins

Miles Sanders seems to be playing nicked up and he’s splitting time with Chuba Hubbard. He was limited to just seven carries for 32 yards last week in a blowout loss to the Lions. His snap count was actually a hair lower than Hubbard’s, though it was close enough to basically consider it a 50-50 split.

This week, Sanders has a nice matchup against a Dolphins defense that ranks 26th in aFPA to opposing running backs. With his role and health undefined right now, it’s risky to bank on Sanders as anything more than a RB3 or flex option this week. This looks like another game that could get out of control quickly for the Panthers, so a similar workload and snap count to last week seems in play.

Update: With Sanders out, make sure to get him out of your lineup. Chuba Hubbard becomes an interesting RB2 option this week.

CAR RB Miles Sanders - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Detroit Lions

Miles Sanders was held to just 19 yards on the ground last week, though his workload was encouraging. He had 13 carries and three receptions. Less encouraging is his snap count. It was the first time this season he’s seen fewer snaps (43% of the team’s offensive snaps) than Chuba Hubbard (54%). Part of that could’ve been game script. Part of that could’ve been a nagging groin injury. Either way, it’s worth monitoring going forward.

This week, Sanders has a tough matchup against the Lions, who rank first in aFPA to opposing running backs. The Lions just stuffed the Green Bay running game, and Carolina is expected to be in a negative game script in this one. Consider Sanders a fringe-RB2 option this week and tread lightly if possible.

CAR RB Miles Sanders - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Miles Sanders was held to nine carries last week and gained 24 yards on the ground in a loss to the Seahawks. Sanders found the end zone, however, and he also caught five balls on nine targets and added 38 receiving yards to his total. Sanders is clearly the lead back in Carolina, and he’s averaging 17.7 touches per game.

This week, Sanders has a nice matchup against the Vikings, who rank 17th in aFPA to opposing running backs. Sanders hasn’t lit the world on fire so far in his new uniform, but he’s getting plenty of work, and volume still counts for something in fantasy. We have him ranked as a low-end RB1 option this week and he’s worth starting in all formats.

CAR RB Miles Sanders - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Seattle Seahawks

Miles Sanders had just 43 yards on 14 carries against the Saints on Monday night. It was a tough night for the Carolina offense as a whole and New Orleans has looked really good defensively so far this season. Encouragingly, Sanders has 11 targets through two games, so he’s getting plenty of work as the starting back for the Panthers.

This week, Sanders faces a vulnerable Seattle defense that has allowed a touchdown to David Montgomery last week and three touchdowns to the Rams’ running backs in Week 1. Sanders is dealing with a pectoral injury, so keep an eye on his status, but assuming he’s good to go, he’s worth considering as an RB2 this week in a nice matchup.

CAR RB Miles Sanders - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New Orleans Saints

Miles Sanders looked pretty sharp last week, rushing for 72 yards on 18 carries and adding 26 receiving yards on four receptions. Sanders is clearly the primary ball-carrier in this offense, and it looks like Frank Reich won’t be afraid to run the ball with his multi-talented free agent acquisition.

Sanders faces a Saints defense this week that gave up 104 rushing yards and 4.7 yards per carry to the Titans last week, but ranked 13th in aFPA to opposing running backs a year ago. It’s a tough matchup, but Sanders’ steady usage should lead to quality RB2 production. Start him.
