Scouting report

PIT WR Markus Wheaton - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at San Diego
With the possible return of Martavis Bryant this week, look for Markus Wheaton to return to more of a peripheral role in the Steelers offense (not that he's been great this season to begin with). He'll get the majority of the slot work, but it's going to add up to only a few catches per game.

PIT WR Markus Wheaton - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs Baltimore
Wheaton had a season-low two catches for 16 yards last week at St. Louis and had just three targets. Working from the slot, he could be more of a factor now with Mike Vick in the lineup rather than Ben Roethlisberger. Wheaton could see a little more action as the Steelers work some underneath stuff to protect Vick, but probably not enough to be a fantasy factor -- even against a terrible Baltimore pass defense.

PIT WR Markus Wheaton - Week 3, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at St. Louis
Wheaton caught just two passes last week, but made them count for 67 yards. He's not seeing a ton of targets, with just four last week. He could see a couple of extra on some shorter routes out of the slot against a team who can get after the passer like the Rams, but not enough to be more than a flex play.

PIT WR Markus Wheaton - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. San Francisco
Wheaton had a decent start last week, catching three passes for 55 yards and hauling in a two-point conversion pass. But he missed a couple of other catches that would have really made his day a very solid one. With Martavis Bryant out for three more games, Wheaton is going to continue to get looks from Ben Roethlisberger. San Francisco's pass defense was OK last week, but that was at home against Minnesota. Wheaton should be used as a flex player this week.

PIT WR Markus Wheaton - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at New England
Wheaton will start on the outside and slide to the slot when Darrius Heyward-Bey comes in for three-receiver sets. QB Ben Roethlisberger will look his way a lot when he's in the slot, and I actually like Wheaton to outplay his ranking this week. He should be a good No. 3 fantasy receiver in all formats against a totally revamped New England secondary.

PIT WR Markus Wheaton - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Regardless of Martavis Bryant's upside, he and Markus Wheaton are going to share time, depending on the package. So Wheaton will continue to be the starter in many of the two-receiver sets. Entering his third season, Wheaton and Ben Roethlisberger should be on the same page a lot more often than they are not.

Fantasy Downside
Wheaton isn't Antonio Brown and he's not as explosive as Bryant. Heck, he won't be used as often as Le'Veon Bell. That puts him about fourth on the totem pole in this offense.

Bottom Line
Wheaton is going in rounds 14 through 16 in most drafts, which means he's being overlooked. He'll play more slot receiver this year than in the past, which means he can move inside or outside. And with Brown, Bryant and Bell on the field with him, he's going to see plenty of one-on-one matchups. Wheaton's not a bad guy to stash away on your bench.

PIT WR Markus Wheaton - Week 18, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Markus Wheaton Wildcard game vs. Ravens
Markus Wheaton finished off an up-and-down regular season with three receptions for 17 yards last week. He had 53 receptions for 644 yards and two touchdowns this season, basically splitting time with rookie Martavis Bryant in the Steelers' lineup. Wheaton did have two catches for 62 yards and a score in the previous meeting with Baltimore at Heinz Field and was more productive at home than on the road this season. Still, using him as anything more than a flex play is a risk.
