Colts RB Frank Gore wants to play in 2018

The 2017 season is the final year of the three-year deal Frank Gore signed with the Colts back during the 2015 offseason. Gore stated on Monday that he wants to keep on playing past the 2017 season. Considering Gore’s recent resume (hasn’t missed a game since 2010 and coming off a 1,000-yard season last year) should lead to teams not afraid to sign a back that will be 35 years old in 2018.

Focusing on 2017, the Colts are scaling Gore back a bit this offseason, due to an ankle injury. Gore is still practicing, but we’ve seen a good amount of Robert Turbin, and even Josh Ferguson, with the first-team offense. It’s all about building up to Week 1, says Gore, who will undoubtedly be the starter for the regular season opener.

Fantasy Impact: 

Gore said, "Someone will pick me up, if it's not here," according to the story. Gore is expected to get his share of the work in 2017, but Turbin impressed at times last year and the Colts seem to like him. This isn't the first time we heard Turbin will have an increased role.

Colts RB Frank Gore (chest) did not practice Wednesday. We’ll see how Gore progresses this week. If he were to sit, we’d likely see a committee of Robert Turbin and passing specialist Josh Ferguson.

Robert Turbin looks like the likely No. 2 back for the Colts. It’s a job he’s performed before (behind Marshawn Lynch in Seattle) and feels he’s perfectly suited for.

When it comes to Josh Ferguson, the promise he offered coming into the season has not translated thus far. The Colts had extremely high hopes for him after signing him as an undrafted free agent from Illinois, but he has been frustrating to watch rushing for 9 yards on 13 carries this preseason. That’s not to say he had wide running lanes; the run blocking has been lacking, at best. But throw in the fact that Ferguson has had a couple of missed assignments as a pass protector and one could argue he faces an uphill climb against the veterans.

But the Colts still love Ferguson’s potential.

“He’s a third down match-up nightmare,” Chuck Pagano said.

Fantasy Impact: 

Ferguson hasn't carried his OTA momentum into camp or into the preseason games, so he's fallen behind Turbin, apparently. Turbin is a career 4.0 YPC journeyman who can hold down the fort if anything happens to Gore.

Colts look to sort out skill position depth

The Colts have talent at their skill positions, but they also have depth concerns.

“We have three guys at wide receiver [who] we know about and then we have a bunch of guys [who] have talent, can run, have height, weight and speed and can catch and do all those things, but they have to go do it now,” coach Chuck Pagano said. “Those guys are all going to compete for that spot, and that’s what training camp is all about. We’ve got talent, we’ve got guys that are capable, they are just unproven.”

The Colts have nine receivers on their roster not with the last name T.Y. Hilton, Phillip Dorsett or Donte Moncrief. Brian Tyms and Josh Boyce are the only receivers who have a reception in the NFL. The Colts have routinely kept around five receivers during the regular season.

There's no clear-cut favorite on who Frank Gore's backup is even though the team is high on undrafted free agent Josh Ferguson out of Illinois. Gore had 227 more carries than his next closest teammate last season.

Fantasy Impact: 

The Colts are just fine with their starting skill spots, but any kind of injury the team will need to sort out who is up next. Whomever wins the jobs could certainly have fantasy potential if there is an injury at some point. The story also mentioned TE, where it's just Jack Doyle and Chase Coffman behind Dwayne Allen.
