Scouting report

ARI RB Jonathan Dwyer - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Jonathan Dwyer vs. San Francisco
Jonathan Dwyer only had nine carries and 31 yards against the Giants last week, but he got a goal line carry that yielded a touchdown and it looks like he has a good chance to maintain short yardage work. However, his role as a short yardage runner doesn’t bode well for him to be a consistent fantasy producer, and unless you’re in a touchdown only league, he’s worth little more than an Andre Ellington handcuff at this time.

Update:
Following his domestic violence arrest Wednesday, Dwyer will be deactivated and should be pulled out of any lineups. Dwyer can be safely dropped.

ARI RB Jonathan Dwyer - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Jonathan Dwyer vs. New York Giants

Jonathan Dwyer got seven carries on Monday night and added two receptions for a combined total of 28 yards from scrimmage. He looked comfortable in the offense, even if his production didn’t show it, but most importantly, he seems to be the primary handcuff over Stepfan Taylor for Andre Ellington owners.

Still, as long as Ellington is active, expecting more than 6-10 touches per game from the former Steeler is a lot to ask, making his value strictly as a handcuff to Ellington. We don’t expect more than 11 attempts from him or more than six fantasy points this week against the Giants, and unless he’s a handcuff, with Ellington healthy he’s probably safe to drop off your fantasy roster.

ARI RB Jonathan Dwyer - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Jonathan Dwyer vs. San Diego
Jonathan Dwyer is a powerful back who never really put it together in Pittsburgh, finishing with only 197 yards last year. His best season was in 2012, when he rushed for 623 yards, but even then he averaged only 4.0 yards per carry and only scored twice.

This week, he’ll be battling second year man Stepfan Taylor for carries behind starter Andre Ellington. While it’s possible that Dwyer will get his chances this season, it seems risky to assume he’ll be a viable fantasy player in week one, particularly without assurances that he’ll get more than a couple of touches per game.

Update:

Dwyer could see an increase in workload if Ellington misses time, so keep an eye on the status of Ellington. Either Dwyer or Taylor will become borderline RB3 options against the Chargers if Ellington doesn't suit up.

ARI RB Dwyer Jonathan - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
After the retirement of Rashard Mendenhall, the Cardinals picked up another former Steelers running back. Jonathan Dwyer, a 2010 sixth-round pick of the Steelers who has played his entire career in Pittsburgh, signed with Arizona in March. HC Bruce Arians was the Steelers’ offensive coordinator for Dwyer’s first two NFL seasons, so Dwyer already knows the offense.

Fantasy Downside
In 2013 Dwyer was largely phased out of the Steelers’ offense, carrying just 49 times for 197 yards. There was a reason for that. He appears to be a plodder at best when asked to handle more than a complementary role.

Bottom Line
In 2012, however, Dwyer showed that he can provide solid production, getting six starts and rushing 156 times for 623 yards. In addition to providing some depth in the backfield behind Andre Ellington, who had a very promising rookie season in Arizona last year and is widely viewed as a breakout candidate this season, Dwyer seems to have moved ahead of Stepfan Taylor for goal-line work during the preseason. That doesn't seem like a sufficient role to make him draftable, but Dwyer is a player worth keeping on your waiver-wire list.
