The Texans are one of the teams interested in Matt Leinart and could end up signing him if reports are true that Seattle isn’t interested in the former Arizona quarterback.

On a day in which they made three roster moves and signed seven players to their practice squad, the Texans decided they are interested in Leinart, 27, according to NFL people familiar with the situation.

The lefthanded Leinart (6-5, 232) is free to negotiate with any team. If the Texans sign him, he will join a team that has Matt Schaub as the starter and Dan Orlovsky as the backup.

On Sunday, the Texans didn’t re-sign quarterback John David Booty to the regular roster or sign him to the practice squad. But they have a roster spot open and one spot available on the practice squad.

If they sign Leinart, it is unlikely Booty would return. If Leinart signs with another team, the Texans have a spot open for Booty if they want to bring him back.

Seattle, coached by Pete Carroll, would seem the natural destination for Leinart. He won the Heisman Trophy at USC when Carroll was Trojans coach. says Seattle isn’t interested. says there’s disagreement in the Seahawks front office over Leinart.

Other possible destinations, according to Internet reports, are Oakland, Cincinnati and Jacksonville. Tennessee also was mentioned, but the Titans aren’t interested.
