The Ravens' big-name backup carousel rolled on Tuesday morning.
The team signed Ryan Mallett to a deal that could be worth up to $2.5 million in 2016, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. The deal includes a $1.5 million base salary and up to $1 million in incentives, per Rapoport. Mallett will join a roster that currently has Jimmy Clausen at the wheel. Matt Schaub and Bryn Renner are also vying for playing time over the final stretch.
The story speculates it seems like a move for the future. Schaub doesn't seem to be the answer behind Joe Flacco and the Ravens likely want to make their own evaluation on Mallett, who went from Texans starter to unemployed after he overslept and missed a team flight.
BAL QB Jimmy Clausen - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook
Week 16 vs. Pittsburgh
Jimmy Clausen struggled against the Chiefs last week, throwing a pair of picks. He did have two touchdown passes and 281 yards passing, but it was too little too late against the Kansas City team that steamrolled the Ravens and won 34-14.
This week, Clausen faces a vulnerable Steelers pass defense, but is not guaranteed to get the start over newcomer Ryan Mallett, as the two battle over a potential 2016 roster spot in the closing weeks of the season. Regardless of who starts, fantasy owners should look away from the Ravens passers, as none project to do well even if they start.
