Scouting report

CAR WR Jerricho Cotchery - Week 21, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Super Bowl vs. Denver
Jerricho Cotchery caught a pair of passes against the Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game for 17 yards. Cotchery is used mostly in sub-packages in the Panther offense, and while he’s been a trusty target to move the chains for quarterback Cam Newton, he’s unlikely to get enough targets to be a reliable fantasy option. His upside is limited and his floor is pretty low, making him one of the least attractive options for fantasy Super Bowl lineups.

CAR WR Jerricho Cotchery - Week 20, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

NFC Championship vs. Arizona

Jerricho Cotchery had three catches last week for 22 yards against the Seahawks in a game where Carolina got up on Seattle early and ran a conservative offensive game plan throughout the second half. Cotchery is a useful player for the Panthers, but he’s not much of a fantasy option as he generally plays in sub-packages. The Panthers are a run-heavy offense and none of their receivers have put up consistent enough fantasy numbers to bank on this week.

CAR WR Jerricho Cotchery - Week 19, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 19 vs Seattle

Jerricho Cotchery had a touchdown to end the season against the division rival Bucs, but he was largely inconsistent from a fantasy perspective all year. He finished the year with 39 catches, 485 yards, and three touchdowns and will continue to play only in sub-packages against the Seahawks this week. None of the Panther receivers inspire confidence this week in a tough matchup, but Cotchery probably has the lowest ceiling of all of the options and should likely be avoided in all fantasy leagues.

CAR WR Jerricho Cotchery - Week 13, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. New Orleans
Jerricho Cotchery was old reliable last week against the Cowboys, catching five of the six passes thrown his way for 73 yards. This was his fourth game of the season with six targets, but he’s only eclipsed the 50 yard mark three times all year and he has only one touchdown. He may continue to get looks in sub-packages in the Panther offense, but his upside is limited due to his lack of production and his lack of big play potential, and he’s better left on waivers in most leagues.

CAR WR Jerricho Cotchery - Week 12, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Dallas
Jerricho Cotchery had four catches and 57 yards last week against Washington, and now he’s healthy, he seems to be settling into that WR3 role for the Panthers. While he may continue to get some looks in the offense, the Panthers passing game isn’t prolific enough to make the WR3 on the team a viable fantasy option week-to-week. He should probably stay on waivers in most leagues.

CAR WR Jerricho Cotchery - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Jerricho Cotchery was thought to be on his way down the depth receiving chart entering this season after the Panthers drafted Devin Funchess in the second round of the NFL Draft, but Kelvin Bejamin's knee injury has opened the door for Cotchery to remain in the rotation. He had 48 receptions last year for 580 yards and a touchdown and can still be a steady route runner when he gets snaps.

Fantasy Upside
Cotchery didn’t score much last year, but he’s a savvy route runner who scored 10 touchdowns with the Steelers in 2013 and has the ability to help out the Panthers offense in the red zone. Additionally, the injury to Benjamin leaves him as the most accomplished receiver on the Carolina roster and at least gives him a chance to compete for a starting role on the outside.

Fantasy Downside
There may not be much left in the tank for the 33-year-old, though he has never been the fastest receiver in the game anyway. The Panthers are also hoping their youngsters take over for Benjamin and will give them every opportunity to do so. Even if Cotchery wins a starting job, the Panthers offense and his lack of explosiveness limits his potential. It’s also possible the Panthers bring in another veteran before the season starts.

Bottom Line
Cotchery gets a fantasy boost after the Benjamin injury, but he’s still not a great draft option for fantasy owners. He might be worth a bench spot in deeper leagues if he can secure a starting role on the Panthers depth chart, but Cotchery has just as good a chance of winding up as Carolina's fourth or fifth receiver.

CAR WR Jerricho Cotchery - Week 19, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Divisional Round – Jerricho Cotchery vs. Seattle
Jerricho Cotchery had three catches for 14 yards against Arizona last week, and with Philly Brown’s status in air for this week’s matchup in Seattle, he could be in for a few extra targets. However, he’ll be facing the league’s top defense, and his upside is limited anyway on a week-to-week basis. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere for a guy with more upside, but if you’re in a deep league, and you need 3-5 points, he’s not a horrible option, albeit one with little chance of making a big play.
