Scouting report

NO QB Jameis Winston - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Carolina Panthers

Jameis Winston could be in line to start Sunday against the Panthers with Derek Carr dealing with a concussion and a shoulder injury. He went 2/5 for 41 yards in the fourth quarter after replacing Carr. When he stepped in for Carr in Week 10, he went 13/25 for 122 yards with two touchdowns. Winston doesn't add much more than what Carr does, so he's at about the same level in fantasy, a low-end QB2 against a solid Panthers defense. Remember too that the Saints can always bring in Taysom Hill at times as well.

NO QB Jameis Winston - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Minnesota Vikings (London)

Jameis Winston's status for Sunday game against the Vikings in London is up in the air as he did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. He is still dealing with his vertebrae fractures as well as ankle and hip flexor injuries. If Winston cannot go this week, it will be Andy Dalton leading the charge. Either way, no Saints QB is worth a start this week. Winston did throw for 353 yards last week but also threw two interceptions and has five in the last two weeks. There's too much concern here.

Update: Winston is doubtful to play Sunday, so it would be Andy Dalton starting if Winston cannot. Dalton has very little fantasy value and managers should look elsewhere if possible, although if Taysom Hill is active and eligible in your TE slot, there's some upside there in deeper leagues.

NO QB Jameis Winston - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Carolina Panthers

How Jameis Winston got through Week 2 is incredible. He played with four broken vertebrae and somehow got 236 yards and a touchdown, though he did throw three interceptions. He's obviously still dealing with the injury and has been limited in practice, so he's a tough play this week against the Panthers, who rank 12th in Pass DVOA.

NO QB Jameis Winston - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jameis Winston led the charge as New Orleans came back from 16 down to beat the Falcons in Week 1. He threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns. The Saints look like they'll be just fine on offense now that Winston is back and healthy. Of course, the one and only Taysom Hill is still around and the Saints ran a few plays with him at quarterback, even with him having switched to tight end. Winston is still worthy of a QB2 start against the Buccaneers, the team against which he tore his ACL in Week 8 last season. The Bucs completely shut down Dak Prescott in Week 1 before he left with a hand injury. Jameis Winston has a better supporting cast to throw to than Prescott did, but it's still a tough defense Winston is going up against, keeping him in QB2 territory.

NO QB Jameis Winston - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Atlanta Falcons

It's easy to forget how good Jameis Winston actually was in 2021 before he got hurt. He had two games with at least four touchdown passes in the first five weeks of the season. He's back and so is WR Michael Thomas, though Thomas may not be 100 percent. Still, Winston also has Chris Olave and Jarvis Landry to throw to. Winston is a high-upside QB2 this week against what could be a dreadful Falcons defense.

NO QB Jameis Winston - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Jameis Winston was starting to resurrect his career a bit before his Week 8 ACL tear, including two games with at least four touchdown passes. Sean Payton may be gone as head coach, but the offense should still have continuity with longtime offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael now running the offense. Winston also will have Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry, and rookie Chris Olave to throw to.

2022 Fantasy Downside
The downside is pretty simple: how will Winston recover from that ACL tear? He also didn’t have a single game over 300 yards last season. It remains to be seen how much of the offense Carmichael will allow Winston to control and if he’ll be able to sling the ball more.

2022 Bottom Line
It’s a new era in New Orleans, but overall, things should still be pretty familiar, with Winston and Carmichael still around. Having a healthy Thomas will help a lot and the Saints traded up for Olave, so they clearly have high hopes for him. Landry will be a nice add, as well. Winston will settle in nicely as a solid QB2 in fantasy drafts this season with some low-end QB1 upside some weeks.

NO QB Jameis Winston - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs Buccaneers

New Orleans just isn't as explosive on offense with Jameis Winston. Did you know he doesn't even have a game with 20 completions yet this season? And nine of his 13 touchdowns this season have come in two games. But if there's a game for Winston to shine, it's this week, as he faces his former team, the Buccaneers. We would just hope the passing game, outside of Alvin Kamara, wakes up. Winston enters as a mid-tier QB2 for this week.
