Scouting report

LV WR Hunter Renfrow - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Jacksonville Jaguars

Hunter Renfrow has been relegated to an afterthought this season with Davante Adams in town, and after just nine targets and 86 yards combined over his last three starts, fantasy managers should consider moving on from him in all but the deepest of PPR formats.

LV WR Hunter Renfrow - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at New Orleans Saints

Hunter Renfrow caught three balls for 55 yards last week against the Texans. Renfrow will be jockeying for targets with not only Davante Adams, but also Mack Hollins for the remainder of the season, making him too inconsistent to start in most leagues. Because he has at least three catches in all four of his outings this year, he has some low-end WR3 potential in PPR formats, but he should be on the bench for most managers.

LV WR Hunter Renfrow - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Houston Texans

Hunter Renfrow returned to action against the Chiefs before the bye last week and caught four balls for 25 yards. He’s getting a decent number of targets (20 in three active games), but he’s averaging just 7.5 yards per reception – a career low. Against a middle-of-the-road Houston pass defense, Renfrow should be considered a low-end WR3, with less value in standard formats.

LV WR Hunter Renfrow - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Kansas City Chiefs

Hunter Renfrow has missed the past few weeks with concussion issues, but he’s back at practice this week, so there’s potential for him to return to action. If he does, he has a nice matchup against the Chiefs, who rank 21st in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. Be sure to have a backup plan available, however, just in case he’s not active. Mack Hollins would stand to benefit again if Renfrow were to miss another contest.

LV WR Hunter Renfrow - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Arizona Cardinals

Hunter Renfrow was tied for second on the team with six targets, but was limited to just 21 yards on three receptions in a loss to the Chargers last week. It was good to see six targets, but the addition of Davante Adams – 17 targets – seemed to have the affect we all feared on Renfrow’s workload. This week, he’s a low-end flex option or fringe WR3 in what should be a decent matchup against the Cardinals. This could be a shootout, and Mecole Hardman found the end zone last week operating mostly out of the slot, where Renfrow spends the bulk of his time. There’s some upside here.

LV WR Hunter Renfrow - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Los Angeles Chargers

Hunter Renfrow led the team with 103 catches for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns last season, but a lot of that was with Darren Waller injured and Zay Jones as the second-best active receiver. With Davante Adams now in the fold, expect Renfrow to go back to reasonable slot duty this year. He had lines of 49-605-4 and 56-656-2 in his first two seasons in the league, and those numbers seem more likely this year.

Renfrow will begin the 2022 season against the Chargers. Los Angeles ranked third in the NFL in aFPA to opposing wide receivers last year and upgraded their defense – and specifically their secondary – over the offseason. Renfrow will have a hard time matching his targets from last year with a healthy (maybe) Darren Waller and the addition of Davante Adams to the offense. All things considered, Renfrow is a pass until we see this offense can sustain three pass-catchers. Sit him.

LV WR Hunter Renfrow - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Hunter Renfrow had a career-year in 2021, leading the Raiders with 103 catches on 128 targets for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. He led the team in every major receiving category and expanded his repertoire from move-the-chains slot work to full-time target hog. Renfrow is shifty and finds space in zone defenses well. He has the trust of quarterback Derek Carr and should continue to get plenty of targets, especially on third downs.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Renfrow benefited greatly from the lack of other receiving options in Las Vegas last year. Zay Jones was the team’s second-best wide receiver and Darren Waller was limited to just 11 games. With DaVante Adams now in town, Renfrow may go back to his previous role as a chain-mover only. In 2019 and 2020, Renfrow had 71 and 77 targets, respectively, averaged 630.5 yards, and scored a total of just six touchdowns. Those numbers seem more likely with the addition of Adams and a healthy Waller back in play.

2022 Bottom Line
Renfrow in the seventh round seems a little rich considering his likely decrease in role this year. He’s being drafted ahead of guys like Drake London and Rashod Bateman, who both seem to have clearer paths to triple-digit targets. He’s not a bad option in PPR formats as a low-risk WR3 in your lineup, but fantasy managers should look for a little more upside in the middle rounds of the draft than Renfrow will provide.
