Scouting report

CLE WR Dwayne Bowe - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Back in 2010, when Dwayne Bowe scored 15 touchdowns and racked up 1,162 receiving yards as part of a Kansas City squad that unexpectedly won the AFC West, he looked like a fantasy force for years to come. However, in the four years since that sensational season, Bowe has scored just 13 touchdowns. His yardage totals dropped as well and the Chiefs, tired of paying Park Place hotel prices for Baltic Avenue style rooms, dropped Dwayne earlier this year. Hoping his decline was largely the result of a primitive Kansas City passing game, the Browns brought Bowe to Cleveland hoping he can revive his once-promising career. Can Bowe make a big impact in his new home?

2015 Upside
The Cleveland front office passed on taking the likes of Sammy Watkins, Odell Beckham Jr., Mike Evans, and Kelvin Benjamin in the 2014 draft. They also cut Charles Johnson, who did well down the stretch in Minnesota. So it is easy to question a shaky front office for banking on Bowe. Nonetheless, they are, and rather than dwell on the decision, one should focus on the fact Bowe has the potential to lead the team in targets. Cleveland looks to be the worst team in the AFC North once again, which means Dwayne will frequently have a chance to rack up numbers when the Browns fall behind.

2015 Downside
It sounds strange to say because the Browns have a reputation for being weak at the receiver position, but Bowe is actually going to have a tougher battle for targets in Cleveland than he did in Kansas City. Players such as Andrew Hawkins, Taylor Gabriel and Brian Hartline range from competent to decent. Last year, until Albert Wilson came on at the end of the year, Bowe was the only passable player the Chiefs had out wide and he still struggled. Dwayne's defenders will blame his problems on timid Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith, but Josh McCown is worse than Smith and Smith's conservative nature did not stop tight end Travis Kelce from emerging last year. Heck, journeyman blocking tight end Anthony Fasano scored four touchdowns in 2014 for the Chiefs while Bowe scored zero. And when Bowe was doing well in 2010, it was with Matt Cassel, another signal caller universally regarded as worse than Smith. The fact Dwayne is a player in decline is pretty hard to hide. Cleveland will be built around the run and also has a pretty tough schedule.

Bottom Line
If your philosophy is to take established veterans as your reserve receivers, Bowe might be okay as a WR5/WR6. However, if you want a reserve with upside who has the potential to step in as a regular starter, look elsewhere. The combination of a player past his prime and a less than enchanting offense more often than not leads to fantasy frustration.

KC WR Dwayne Bowe - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 – Dwayne Bowe vs. San Diego Chargers
A lost season for Dwayne Bowe continued last Sunday in Pittsburgh, with Bowe hauling in six passes for 57 yards as the Chiefs lost 20-12. Bowe failed to find the end zone yet again, which is appalling given he is supposed to be Kansas City’s top receiver. Of course, it’s also not surprising, as Bowe has done all he can in recent years to lose the trust of fantasy owners. Anyone hoping to capture a championship or score some money in a daily league this weekend should not be counting on Bowe.

KC WR Dwayne Bowe - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 – Dwayne Bowe at Pittsburgh Steelers
Dwayne Bowe had one of his better games of the season last Sunday when Kansas City defeated Oakland 31-13. Bowe caught three passes for 69 yards. Of course, he once again failed to find the end zone. Pass defense is not an area in which Pittsburgh excels, but Bowe stopped deserving the benefit of the doubt awhile ago. Owners in all formats are advised to bypass Bowe when making all-important lineup decisions.

KC WR Dwayne Bowe - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 – Dwayne Bowe vs. Oakland Raiders
We have all heard the sports saying about teams playing down to their competition. Well, Dwayne Bowe has been playing down to the level of the rest of the receivers on the Kansas City roster. Bowe is supposed to be a superior player, at least relative to his teammates, but over the last four weeks, Bowe has nine receptions for 107 yards. Bowe has gone from being worthy of a reserve spot with fantasy teams to nothing more than another guy on the waiver wire.

KC WR Dwayne Bowe - Week 14, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 – Dwayne Bowe at Arizona Cardinals
Dwayne Bowe has made a habit out of being dreadful. The one-time darling of the fantasy football community who scored 15 touchdowns in 2010 has yet to score this year and was horrible in Week 13, catching two passes for 18 yards. Although Arizona’s pass defense is far from perfect (just ask Julio Jones), Bowe would be a horrible bet for any fantasy squad.

KC WR Dwayne Bowe - Week 13, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 – Dwayne Bowe vs. Denver Broncos

Arguably the worst number one wide receiver on any team in the NFL, Dwayne Bowe’s downward spiral shows no signs of ending. Even in a prime matchup with Raiders, Bowe was only able to muster three catches for 42 yards. He has not scored a touchdown since Kansas City’s playoff loss to Indianapolis back in January. If Bowe continues to have a presence on your roster, he needs to be given a prime spot on the bench once again.

KC WR Dwayne Bowe - Week 12, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 – Dwayne Bowe at Oakland Raiders
If his numbers were better, we might be able to generate some compassion for Dwayne Bowe. After all, he is an island of competency among the ruin of receivers on Kansas City’s roster. And Bowe has never played with a great quarterback. But when you only catch two passes for 18 yards as Bowe did on Sunday and you are the number one wide receiver on your team, it leads to feelings of frustration and a desire to bash Bowe. However, there is no point in excessive bashing. The quick and easy thing to do is keep Dwayne on the bench.
