Titans release RB David Cobb

The Titans have released running back David Cobb, a fifth round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Cobb was one of two players released on Tuesday as the team got down to the league-mandated 75 players.

Fantasy Impact:

Cobb had a disappointing rookie season in 2015. He spent the first half of last season on injured reserve with a calf injury. During the second half of the year, he had limited success carrying the football. The Titans have a pretty deep backfield, trading for DeMarco Murray and drafting Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry. The team also has running backs Dexter McCluster, Antonio Andrews, Bishop Sankey and David Fluellen.

David Cobb healthy, but in RB3 battle

His rookie season was a frustrating one in many respects, but by the end of it, David Cobb thought he might have a decent shot at being the Titans’ starting running back in 2015.

After all, Cobb carried 19 times for 73 yards in the Titans’ regular-season ending loss to Indianapolis.

A few months later, everything changed for Cobb, however, when the Titans traded for DeMarco Murray and drafted Derrick Henry.

Fantasy Impact:

All of a sudden, Cobb finds himself in a battle for the third running back position, along with Antonio Andrews, Bishop Sankey and others, the story said. Cobb is finally healthy and may be able to show what he can do to win a roster spot. It's also fair to wonder what Murray may have left after not showing much last season with Eagles.

Titan running game remains split

The Tennessee Titans pledged to give David Cobb about half the load in the running game Sunday against Jacksonville.

And the rookie running back's workload did come out dead even in the Titans’ third win of the season.

Starter Antonio Andrews had 13 carries and turned them into 58 yards and Cobb had 13 for 40 yards.

It was quarterback Marcus Mariota, however, who starred in the rushing offense, with nine carries for 112 yards including a fantastic 87-yard touchdown run that put the Titans ahead for good with 8:30 on the game clock.

Fantasy Impact:

HC Mike Mularkey said said the Titan running backs can do a better job. The fear when Cobb arrived on the scene was Andrews' workload would continue to be limited, and it has. Titan backs are risky plays outside of very deep leagues and it looks like they are going to continue to not feature one back.

David Cobb eyes more chances

Titans interim coach Mike Mularkey said he expects David Cobb will play more in upcoming games, beginning with Sunday’s game against the Raiders.

Antonio Andrews has been the workhorse for the Titans in recent weeks – he had 78 yards on 15 carries against the Jaguars – and Bishop Sankey is also expected to be active on Sunday with Dexter McCluster out with a knee injury.

Cobb said he’s looking forward to more chances, and for an opportunity to be more productive.

“The preseason is nothing like the regular season, and practice is nothing like a real game. Just getting my feet wet, it was good,’’ Cobb said. “I know they are not going to give me anything, so I have to go out and earn it. I have to go out and work hard and when I get opportunities I have to do well."

Fantasy Impact:

Cobb finished with four carries for minus-3 yards last week. He'll be a risky fantasy start until we start to see more of a workload.
