Scouting report

by Scot Berggren

DEN QB Chad Kelly - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

After missing his entire rookie season following wrist surgery, Chad Kelly will be competing with Paxton Lynch for No. 2 QB job in Denver, behind starter Case Keenum. In two seasons at Ole Miss, he threw for 6,800 yards and 50 TDs.

Fantasy Downside

Even though he was the last pick in the 2017 draft, Kelly has a ton of potential. However, this will be Keenum’s team—as long as he stays healthy and remains effective.

2018 Bottom Line

Kelly and Lynch will battle throughout the preseason for the right to be the first option behind Keenum. While Lynch has the first-round pedigree, Kelly has the bloodlines of being Hall of Famer Jim Kelly’s nephew. While neither of the backup QBs should be on a fantasy roster at the beginning of the season, whoever emerges could be called on to play significant games if Keenum doesn’t hold up.

DEN QB Chad Kelly - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Despite being 2017's Mr. Irrelevant in the NFL Draft, Chad Kelly had an impressive two seasons at Mississippi. He may be the most talented QB on the Broncos roster. In 2015, he threw for over 4,000 yards with 31 passing TDs, to go along with eclipsing 500 yards and 10 scores on the ground.

Fantasy Downside

Kelly spent the offseason recovering from wrist surgery and didn’t throw for three months. He also suffered a torn ACL and lateral meniscus during his college days. Kelly will be the No. 3 QB on the depth chart, behind Trevor Siemian and former first-round pick Paxton Lynch.

2017 Bottom Line

While his rookie campaign will likely feature a lot of clipboard-holding and working with the scout team, Kelly may have the highest ceiling of any of the three Denver QBs. As Siemian and Lynch use the preseason to battle for the starting role, Kelly will probably be delegated to the emergency QB role each week. While he is not worthy of a fantasy roster spot, keep an eye on Jim Kelly’s nephew, as he just could be the under center come 2018.
