Scouting report

CAR RB Cameron Artis-Payne - Week 17, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Tampa Bay

Cameron Artis-Payne had five carries for 49 yards last week, including a nice 31 yard run which was the longest play from scrimmage for the Panthers in a disappointing loss to the division rival Falcons. The rookie added a seven yard reception to his total, but overall it was a frustrating day for the Panther offense and fantasy owners suffered as a result.

This week, the rookie faces the Bucs but his value will likely be determined by the status of Jonathan Stewart who has a chance of returning. If Stewart is active, then both backs will have their values hurt in all likelihood, making neither one a good fantasy option. However, if Stewart is inactive again, with Fozzy Whitaker now hurt, Artis-Payne could in line for a full workload, which would make him a borderline RB2 option in all leagues.

CAR RB Cameron Artis-Payne - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Atlanta

Cameron Artis-Payne got the bulk of the carries in the absence of Jonathan Stewart last week against the Giants and wound up with 14 carries and 59 yards. He also added 34 yards on a pair of receptions. The Panthers look to be using the rookie more than Mike Tolbert or Fozzy Whitaker, which is a good sign for fantasy owners who bet on him instead of one of the other two during waivers last week.

This week, Artis-Payne should be in for another full workload and should find success against the Falcons run defense. While Atlanta has been a little above average in rushing yards allowed, they are tied for last in the league with 18 rushing touchdowns given up to opposing offenses this year. The rookie isn’t without risk, but should be in line for nice, RB2 kind of numbers this week.

CAR RB Cameron Artis-Payne - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Cameron Artis-Payne has a legitimate chance to carve a role in the Panthers’ offense this season. While not a versatile threat, he’s a compact, powerful runner who was very productive at Auburn a year ago, averaging 5.3 yards per carry on his way to 1,608 yards total on the ground. He added 13 touchdowns and his low center of gravity helps him in short yardage situations.

Fantasy Upside
The 5th-round rookie will get an opportunity behind Jonathan Stewart with DeAngelo Williams shipped off to Pittsburgh. He will have to beat out Fozzy Whitaker, who played well in a limited capacity last season, but Artis-Payne could find a way to crack the lineup in a complementary role to the oft-injured Stewart as a means to grind the clock out and take advantage of his ability to churn out tough yards. Stewart’s injury history also makes backup running backs in Carolina always intriguing.

Fantasy Downside
He’s a powerful runner, but only caught 14 passes in college and is a year behind Whitaker in picking up the Panthers offense. Artis-Payne will need to work his way up to second on the depth chart to be of any fantasy value, and even then, he has no chance of winning a starting job over Stewart.

Bottom Line
Artis-Payne should be considered a late-round flier or Stewart handcuff if he can beat out Whitaker in training camp. However, the most likely scenario if Stewart gets hurt again is that both backups get time on the field and limit each others fantasy value. Keep an eye on Artis-Payne's snap count, but he should stay undrafted at this point unless you have a very large roster and can afford to stash two handcuffs for Stewart.
