SF QB Brian Hoyer - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Carolina Panthers

Brian Hoyer might be a good backup option for you if you had Jameis Winston as your starter and didn't take a backup. He probably went undrafted in a lot of leagues and has a home game against a Carolina team that was below average against the pass last season. That said, Hoyer doesn't have the best weapons to work with, but he knows the offense well and should have some success. Hoyer isn't an every-week starter, but look for the 49ers to throw some wrinkles out there in their opener that teams haven't seen. An emergency situation is the only way Hoyer should be in your lineup, even if he did have four consecutive 300-yard games in his starts last season.

SF QB Brian Hoyer - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Brian Hoyer is a starting quarterback in a familiar offense with no true other starting option on the roster.

Fantasy Downside

The weapons around Hoyer aren't great.

2017 Bottom Line

There's no way to sugarcoat this. Hoyer, much as he has been throughout his NFL career, is strictly a second- or third-string guy on your roster. And you're always looking for an upgrade. But he's a starter, and unless the 49ers waive the white flag and decide to go with Matt Barkley or rookie C.J. Beathard, he should remain so.

CHI QB Brian Hoyer - Week 7, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Green Bay
Brian Hoyer has now thrown for 300 yards or more in four consecutive games, although he failed to get it in the end zone last week. The lack of touchdowns isn't something to be too concerned about moving forward.

Hoyer will try and go for five 300-yard games in a row Thursday night against the Packers. Green Bay has allowed an average of 287 yards through the air this season, so there's a good chance Hoyer has some success.

There are plenty of other good options this week, but Hoyer certainly isn't a bad choice. Through four starts, he has six interceptions and no touchdowns, and has a favorable matchup this week.

CHI QB Brian Hoyer - Week 6, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Jacksonville
Brian Hoyer continued his amazing play last week with his third consecutive 300-yard game. He fell just three yards shy of 400, even after losing Kevin White. In addition, Hoyer has had two touchdowns in every start, and still hasn't thrown an interception.

Hoyer will look to continue his dominance this week in a favorable matchup against the Jaguars. Jacksonville has allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, although they have held quarterbacks to under 300 yards passing in every game.

Given his success and the matchup, we view Hoyer as a low-end QB1 play this week.

CHI QB Brian Hoyer - Week 5, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Indianapolis
Brian Hoyer is turning into a solid fantasy football quarterback. He's posted back-to-back 300-yard games with two touchdowns in each contest with no interceptions. He'll look to continue that success this week against the Colts who are allowing 277 passing yards per game.

Considering the favorable matchup, and Hoyer's previous success, there are plenty of reasons to like him this week. We don't view him as an elite option, but he's a great daily fantasy player because he's cheap, and he's a solid bye-week filler as he's probably available on waivers.

CHI QB Brian Hoyer - Week 4, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Detroit
So Brian Hoyer wasn't too bad of a fantasy option last week. He finished with 317 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He'll look to repeat that success in Week 4 against the Lions, a defense that has allowed the most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks.

There are a lot of other quarterback options that make more sense this week, but Hoyer could be a sneaky play if you need a bye-week filler. He's got a lot of talent around him, and has the chance to put up big numbers against a poor pass defense this week.

CHI QB Brian Hoyer - Week 3, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Dallas
Brian Hoyer will likely get the start this week in place of an injured Jay Cutler. He came in last Monday night and completed 9-of-12 passes for just 78 yards.

Hoyer isn't a terrible quarterback, and he actually did pretty well for Houston last season before getting hurt. He also has good players surrounding him in Chicago to help him out.

But, at the end of the day, this is an average quarterback without a good matchup. There's not a lot to get excited about with Hoyer, and that's why he's a lower-end option at the QB position.
