Scouting report

by Anthony Stalter

LA RB Benny Cunningham - Week 13, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at New England
Benny Cunningham caught one-of-one passes for 12 yards in the Rams' Week 12 loss to the Saints. He didn't receive a carry. Cunningham is nothing more than a handcuff for Todd Gurley, although he's barely worth stashing at this point.

LA RB Benny Cunningham - Week 12, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at New Orleans
Benny Cunningham rushed twice for seven yards and also added one catch for negative three yards in the Rams' Week 11 loss to the Dolphins. Cunningham remains firmly behind Todd Gurley in the Rams' backfield and has zero fantasy appeal. He ranks as our RB50 for Week 12 and should be avoided.

LA RB Benny Cunningham - Week 11, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Miami
Benny Cunningham rushed six times for 40 yards, while catching three passes on five targets for seven additional yards in the Rams' Week 10 victory over the Jets. Cunningham continues to be utilized more in the passing game than Todd Gurley, but he's entrenched as the backup. He is a handcuff for Gurley only and should be avoided.

LA RB Benny Cunningham Week 10, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at New York Jets
Benny Cunningham attempted just three carries against the Panthers, rushing for 10 yards while also catching five passes for 32 additional yards in the Rams’ Week 9 loss. Cunningham would be in line to start if Todd Gurley (thigh) was unable to play Sunday versus the Jets. Cunningham wouldn’t be a recommended play given New York’s stout run defense and Los Angeles’ horrendous offensive line, but desperate owners might not have a choice if Gurley is inactive. For now, Cunningham ranks as our RB53 for Week 10.

LA RB Benny Cunningham - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The only upside Benny Cunningham has in terms of fantasy value is that he’s the No. 2 back on the Rams depth chart. Tre Mason has run into multiple off-field issues this offseason, leaving Cunningham entrenched as the team’s backup to Todd Gurley. That said, with Los Angeles counting on Gurley to be an every-down back for 2016, Cunningham will have a limited role as long as Gurley is healthy.

Fantasy Downside
For a second straight season, Cunningham played 16 games for the Rams last year, but saw his yardage dip from 246 in 2014 to 140 in 2015. He also saw his touchdowns drop from four down to zero, his receptions drop from 45 down to 26, and his receiving yardage fall from 352 down to 250. After finishing as fantasy’s RB40 in 2014, Cunningham completely fell off the map last season while finishing as fantasy’s RB77.

2016 Bottom Line
Cunningham is going undrafted in all leagues and ranks as our RB81 heading into training camp. Owners could choose to handcuff Cunningham and Gurley, but depending on the size of the league, better options would likely be available on the waiver wire if Gurley were to be injured. It’s best to avoid Cunningham on draft night, even if you wind up drafting Gurley. The Rams offense would be putrid if Gurley were to go down.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 17, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at San Francisco
Benny Cunningham rushed just once for zero yards while also adding three catches for 14 yards in the Rams' upset win over the Seahawks in Week 16. With Todd Gurley (foot) doubtful for Sunday's game versus the 49ers, Cunningham ranks as our RB44 in standard leagues and as our RB31 in PPR formats for Week 17. While Cunningham will likely share carries with Tre Mason, he probably will maintain his role on third downs. Thus, Mason is the back to own if you're looking for a replacement for Gurley, or a cheap RB2 in DFS leagues.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Cleveland
Benny Cunningham didn't record a carry in the Rams Week 5 loss to the Packers, but did catch 2-of-2 targets for 28 yards. Cunningham will continue to operate as St. Louis' third-down back behind starter Todd Gurley. He has no fantasy relevance and should remain on your waiver wire.
