CLE RB Ben Tate - Week 8, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 – Ben Tate vs. Oakland Raiders
It was a bad day for Ben Tate on Sunday in Jacksonville, but it was not from a lack of touches. Tate carried the ball 16 times. Unfortunately, Ben was only able to produce 36 yards as Cleveland’s offense line, minus center Alex Mack, made the Jaguars look like the 1985 Chicago Bears. Provided the Browns can get their act together, Tate has a great matchup with Oakland’s bottom five run defense. Give him another chance as RB1 numbers could be in the cards.

CLE RB Ben Tate - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 – Ben Tate at Jacksonville Jaguars
Before last week, it was thought that Cleveland’s week six opponent, the Pittsburgh Steelers, represented an appetizer for Ben Tate prior to the main course. While the Steelers have been a bit of an inconsistent mess, they certainly are more formidable than Jacksonville, Oakland, and Tampa Bay, who Tate will be tangling with over the next three weeks. But Tate ended up feasting on the Steelers, rushing for 78 yards and two touchdowns. During this favorable stretch, Tate looks like a solid RB1.

CLE RB Ben Tate - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 – Ben Tate vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

As long as he enjoys good health, Ben Tate will be in position to provide fantasy owners with nice production in a run-heavy offense. Tate rushed for 124 yards on 22 carries in week five and was the clear-cut lead back ahead of solid rookies Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell. After a matchup with Pittsburgh’s respectable but not dominant run defense, Tate’s next three games are against Jacksonville, Oakland, and Tampa Bay. He will be an RB2 this week and could be looking at RB1 production over that tantalizing three-game stretch.

CLE RB Ben Tate - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Ben Tate at Tennessee Titans
Frequently cursed by the injury bug, Ben Tate appears to be healthy for the first time since opening day and also appears poised to reclaim the starting job for the Browns. However, with the emergence of talented rookies Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West, Tate does not possess the upside he had going into the season. Regardless, with Tennessee giving up 127 rushing yards per game, you can roll the dice on Tate as a low-end RB2 or flex.

CLE RB Tate Ben - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Ben Tate at Pittsburgh Steelers

Often regarded as a promising player during his days in Houston, Ben Tate’s path to glory was blocked by injuries, occasional inconsistency, and a spot on the depth chart behind Arian Foster. Now, Tate’s path is much clearer in Cleveland. He is a three-down back on a run-focused team. That kind of volume gives him immense upside.

Tate’s downside surfaces when you focus on the other elements of the Browns offense. Cleveland’s passing game scares no one, giving opponents the ability to suffocate the ground attack the Browns want to establish. Fortunately for Ben, Pittsburgh’s run defense was below-average last year and also gave up a long touchdown run to Rashad Jennings of the New York Giants during the preseason. Although there are definitely questions with Tate, his workload gives him RB2 value.

CLE RB Ben Tate - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Ben…that doesn’t sound like a…oops, wrong conversation. After serving an apprenticeship under Arian Foster in Houston, Ben Tate has arrived in Cleveland to rescue the Browns backfield from the misery it endured in 2013. There’s no question Tate ought to be a significant upgrade over washed-up Willis McGahee and the other assorted ham and eggers the Browns trotted out on a weekly basis. Can he take advantage of his golden opportunity and become one of the best running backs in the fantasy football business?

Fantasy Upside
On paper, Tate is a good fit on the shores of Lake Erie. Ben’s head coach in Houston was Gary Kubiak, now the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Cleveland offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan uses a scheme mirroring Kubiak’s. Although Tate has not always been a consistent performer, he has generated some big moments when Foster was injured. Last year, when Houston lost 34-31 to New England, Tate ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns. The Browns are going to run like crazy with instability at quarterback and uncertainty at receiver. Tate caught a career-high 34 passes last year, showing growth as a receiver.

Fantasy Downside
Tate missed the entire 2010 season due to injury and has to get over the nagging aches and pains that have always seemed to bother him in subsequent years. He also needs to fumble less (he fumbled five times last year) and find more consistency. Otherwise, talented rookie Terrance West could gain a bigger role. At some point, Johnny Manziel is going to be Cleveland’s starting quarterback. Manziel was an excellent runner in college at Texas A&M and will steal some touchdowns from Tate.

Bottom Line
If you are the type of owner who passes up running backs in the early rounds to pick quarterbacks, wide receivers, or Jimmy Graham/Gronk/Julius Thomas, Tate is one of the guys you can take later and give you nice dividends on your investment. As long as Tate holds off West, cuts down on the fumbles, and stays healthy, he will be an RB2.
