MIA RB Arian Foster - Week 7, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Buffalo
The emergence of Jay Ajayi last week kills the weekly upside of Arian Foster, who is too fragile physically to trust anyway. Foster is outside flex consideration until we see him get enough work in this offense to consider starting.

Plus, the Dolphins could be without their above-average blocking tight end Dion Sims, which would also hurt the running game this week.

MIA RB Arian Foster - Week 6, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Pittsburgh
Foster has practiced on a limited basis and looks set to return Sunday against Pittsburgh. That gives him bi- time reception potential with an offensive line struggling to protect for throws downfield. Obviously, monitor his status pre-game Sunday, but he should provide flex appeal in standard and RB2 appeal in PPR.

MIA RB Arian Foster - Week 2, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at New England
Considering he was coming off a ruptured Achilles, Arian Foster looked remarkable Week 1 at Seattle. His 2.9 yards per carry was certainly not great, but it was his prowess as a pass catcher that turned heads, adding 62 yards on three receptions to go along with 38 yards on 13 carries. As long as he's healthy, he will be the lead back, as Jay Ajayi was not even active Week 1. The volume raises his floor each week, but with a tough match-up at New England, we wee him as a low-end RB2.

Week 1 at Seattle
Foster has more value in PPR leagues this week, as the Dolphins are expected to play from behind and pass more as the biggest underdog of Week 1. Even then, he's nothing greater than a FLEX consideration this week against a Seattle defense that was the toughest in the league against fantasy running backs in 2015.

Fantasy Upside
Arian Foster landed in a backfield where there is certainly opportunity for enough work to be fantasy relevant with no incumbent starter in Miami. Combine with the fact that he is not the first but the second free agent running back Adam Gase signed (Denver matched Miami’s offer sheet on restricted free agent C.J. Anderson), and it leads you to believe there isn’t full confidence in 2nd year back Jay Ajayi in Miami. If Foster wins the starting job, Gase has produced fantasy studs at RB. Matt Forte finished as the #9 RB in standard leagues in just 13 games in 2015, and C.J. Anderson was the #11 RB in 2014, despite starting only seven of 15 games. That’s promising upside for Foster in this offense.

Fantasy Downside
Let’s begin with the fact that Arian Foster is coming off a ruptured Achilles going on to age 30. That injury occurred Week 7 last year. Different position, but it took Colts defensive end Robert Mathis more than 12 months to get back on the field with limited snaps for weeks even after his return. It’s also just the latest injury in Foster battered career, missing 23 games now in the past three seasons. Any faith in Foster’s upside in Miami must first come with hope that he stays healthy, and that is a big leap of faith. Combine that with the Miami Herald reporting shortly after the signing of Foster that Ajayi and him would both get “plenty of carries”, and it makes it hard to envision a high ceiling for Foster.

Bottom Line
Foster’s ADP is around the 11th round in 12-team leagues since signing with the Dolphins. In PPR leagues, we have Foster ranked ahead of Ajayi, with the game script likely to favor the passing down back more often in Miami. In either standard or PPR leagues, Foster is only a flex consideration at most until there’s more clarity in this backfield.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Miami
In the win over the Jaguars last Sunday, Arian Foster was held to just 53 rushing yards on 18 attempts, but was more of a weapon in the passing game, collecting five catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. While it’s been a bit of a struggle on the ground, Arian has averaged 115 total yards over the last two weeks and looks to be fully healthy. There is no question Foster should remain in your starting lineup and this week as he'll be facing a Dolphins defense that’s allowing 141 rushing yards per game.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 6, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Jacksonville
Against Indy last Thursday, Arian Foster had trouble getting the ground game going, but still turned in a decent fantasy night thanks to nine receptions for 77 yards. Arian was held to just 41 yards on 19 carries, but it was encouraging to see him take over as the team’s top RB with Alfred Blue seeing only six rushing attempts. Foster left the game momentarily in the second quarter, but was back on the field shortly afterward. He will be facing a Jaguars team that yields 103 ground yards per game, so there’s no doubt fantasy owners should be keeping him in their starting lineups.
