Scouting report

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Chicago Bears

Alexander Mattison gets a good matchup this week as the Vikings head to Chicago. The Bears have allowed a running back to break 15 PPR points in all but one game. That one game was against the Commanders where Washington rattled off 55 straight dropbacks at one point in the game.

Mattison's day against the Chiefs was saved by a touchdown. He only say 11 opportunities in the game. Mattison sits at RB17 in our half-PPR rankings, but there's plenty of downside in his range of outcomes. Plug your nose and play him this week, but don't be surprised if things go south in the coming weeks.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs Kansas City Chiefs

Rumors of Alexander Mattison's demise were greatly exaggerated, apparently. After 62 yards on 19 rushes through the first two weeks, he's rattled off a coupe of 90+ rushing performances.

Only David Montgomery has been able to eclipse 70 yards against this Chiefs defense. They also have only allowed a single rushing touchdown all year. The matchup isn't great and the game script could go sideways quickly on Mattison. He's our RB21, so he's a fine RB2 option.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Carolina Panthers

Alexander Mattison has seen a decent workload thus far, but hasn't been overly effective or efficient. He did show some signs of life with a 93-yard output last week. With the addition of Cam Akers and the pass-happy nature of the offense, it's going to be hard for Mattison to be a top-tier running back option.

We're still starting him this week, as we have him projected as RB16, but it's clear that this isn't the sure thing that we hoped it would be heading into the year. The Panthers have let three running backs eclipse 80 yards from scrimmage already this season. The matchup might make up for his inefficiencies but he's no more than an RB2.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Alexander Mattison has had a rough start to the season. To be fair, he's faced the fifth-most stacked boxes of any qualifying running back, per Next Gen Stats. On the other hand, he's also one of only seven running backs that are more than a full yard under expectation per attempt.

In this game environment, the Vikings might just completely lean on Kirk Cousins arm. Given Mattison's price in drafts this summer, you may feel like you have to start him. He's our RB20 in projections but the downside is massive and he hasn't shown many flashes to give you hope on any upside. The writing seems to be on the wall with the Cam Akers trade, as well. He's startable for now but expectations have to be lowered.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Philadelphia Eagles

Alexander Mattison got off to a rough start in a tough matchup against the Buccaneers. If you were drafting him in the early-mid rounds of fantasy drafts, you were hoping for a much better output than his 11 attempts for 34 yards. He did manage to score a receiving touchdown, but with only three catches for 10 yards that trip to the end zone really saved his day.

The matchup this week isn't any easier. The Eagles gave up 61 yards rushing on 20 carries to Patriots' running backs in Week 1. The fact that they're 7-point underdogs with a difficult matchup means we need to lower our expectations for Mattison. He's not benchable but he's no more than a low-end RB2 or high-end flex option this week.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Alexander Mattison finally gets the role that most fans had been hoping he'd get. He was always the bridesmaid, but now he's the bride. Mattison always filled in well for Dalvin Cook but now he gets the backfield to himself. We have him ranked as the RB13 in a difficult matchup. Tampa Bay only allowed four rushers to cross the 100-yard mark a season ago and allowed just seven touchdowns to the position.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Alexander Mattison has shown his ability to step up when needed for the Minnesota Vikings. In 2022, he played in all 17 games, rushing for 786 yards and scoring 7 touchdowns. His strong finish down the stretch in 2022 combined with the Vikings' commitment to him as evidenced by his new two-year deal, speaks to his potential. With Dalvin Cook's future with the Vikings seeming to be at an end, Mattison could see an increased workload in 2023. With Cook out of the way, Mattison is set to be the team’s every-down back.

Fantasy Downside
The main concern with Mattison is his ability to handle a full workload as the primary running back. While he has performed well in Cook's absence, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain that level of performance over a full season. Additionally, the Vikings' offense has been inconsistent, which could limit Mattison's opportunities.

2023 Bottom Line
Mattison is a player with potential upside for the 2023 fantasy season. He has shown he can produce when given the opportunity. We currently have him ranked as RB16 for 2023. He's worth considering as a flex option with the potential to perform as an RB2 if things break right.
