The Lions should seriously consider sitting Stafford indefinitely until they're comfortable that his AC joint separation has sufficiently healed.
Jim Schwartz insisted following the Lions' 23-13 loss to the Bengals that Stafford's precise injury can't get worse, but that's ridiculous. The more you get hit, the more likely that you will get hurt. You don't need to spend 1 second in med school to figure out those odds, especially with a team that doesn't run the ball well or protect the quarterback well -- things that can go a long way toward keeping a quarterback upright.
"We'll cross that bridge if we get there," said Schwartz when asked if sitting Stafford was a serious option.
That bridge is fast approaching. When risk of more serious injury becomes greater than the reward of additional experience, it's time for prudence.
"Obviously, everyone wants to be healthy," Stafford said. "I dare you to find someone that feels great right now at this point in the season. It's one of those things you have to deal with."
