Titans moving towards a RBBC
Thursday, April 3, 2014, 2:10pm
Chris Johnson's contract that calls for him to earn $8 million in salary this year clearly has been an obstacle to him staying in Tennessee. But even if the contract wasn't an issue the Titans probably would want to purge Johnson. The reason? New coach Ken Whisenhunt likes to spread around playing time and touches between multiple running backs. His plan is to have a running back by committee. Johnson is the type of player who demands the football and never would be happy as a role player. A trade or release, subsequently, is coming.

"Filling in this year for 5-10 touches per game, plus insurance for if/when Ryan Mathews gets injured. He played 16 games for the first time in 2013, and he was not healthy in the postseason."
Last year's RB3, Ronnie Brown, rarely saw 5-10 touches so those are going to have to come from somewhere. Ryan Mathews began to get hot and get over 20 carries a game in the second half last year, but like Acee points out, Mathews wasn't healthy in the playoffs, perhaps as a result of that. Brown's fantasy value likely will be a handcuff to Mathews, but it looks like he's going to be used to prevent wear and tear on Mathews too. Danny Woodhead may also lose a carry or two, but will still be a factor in the passing game.
Fisher: Zac Stacy 'probably that 70-percent guy'

The Rams rushed 426 times last year, which means Stacy would get 298 of those carries if the numbers are similar next season. That would have put him third in the league in 2013 behind just LeSean McCoy and Marshawn Lynch, and just ahead of Matt Forte, Ryan Mathews and Eddie Lacy ... so the company is pretty good.
Ryan Mathews is still San Diego's 'bell cow' RB
Thursday, March 20, 2014, 11:54am
“We know Ryan is our bell cow,” Chargers GM Tom Telesco said. “He’s our No. 1 back. He had an excellent year last year. And we all know what Danny Woodhead can do in his role. We saw that for 16 games last year. And we think Donald can come in and add to that, too, and give us some different options. And a different style, too. The more weapons we can have for Philip Rivers, the better.”
Mathews finished as the #12 RB in standard formats, which is the second time in three seasons that he has posted RB1-type numbers. He'll be a risk/reward pick in 2014 given his injury history. He is currently going in the middle of the 5th round and will be a nice value there if he can stay healthy.

Ryan Mathews played through a high ankle sprain
Tuesday, January 14, 2014, 11:11am
A high ankle sprain carries a four-to-six week recovery timetable.
Ryan Mathews didn't miss one game.
The Chargers running back was clearly hobbled in the team's two playoff contests, not playing in the second half Sunday of a 24-17 loss to the Broncos. While Mathews declined to confirm, sources said his limitation was the result of a high ankle sprain.
If this is indeed the case, Mathews showed some toughness playing through the injury. Given how many owners he has burned through the years, his ADP will be interesting to watch heading into the 2014 season. He was the #10 RB from Week 6 on, so he'll merit consideration in the 3rd round.
Titans hire Ken Whisenhunt as head coach
Monday, January 13, 2014, 8:31pm
Whisenhunt replaces Mike Munchak, who parted with the team after three seasons and a 22-26 record.
Whisenhunt led a revitalized Chargers offense led by QB Philip Rivers, RB Ryan Mathews and WR Keenan Allen. His first order of business will decide who is the future at QB. Jake Locker has been inconsistent, but the Titans hold the #11 pick. Ryan Fitzpatrick could hold down the fort for a year if necessary.

Mathews: "My mindset is I'm playing"
Monday, January 6, 2014, 11:35am
An ankle injury that's slowed him the past two weeks could be played on for so long. He was out most of the second half.
“My mindset is I'm playing (against Denver),” said Mathews, who praised the work of the team's running backs. “We keep fighting. Coach (Mike) McCoy says it all the time. It's the next man up. We're all ready.”
It's interesting that Mathews just didn't say "I'm playing," since that's what most overly optimistic players would say at this point in the season. We'll watch his practice activity, but he may not be able to go against the Broncos.
