Alfred Morris will anchor Redskins' running game
Saturday, February 8, 2014, 11:31am
Are the Redskins better off giving some more of Alfred Morris’ workload to Roy Helu? Maybe a few carries per game to keep Morris fresher in the fourth quarter. But in the big picture it doesn’t make much sense to move a lot of carries from a back who averages 4.7 yards per carry to one who averages almost half a yard less.
New HC Jay Gruden ran a two-back system in Cincinnati, but Morris is quite a bit better than BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Helu does not have the talent of Giovani Bernard. We're expecting Morris to be the lead back, though his inactivity on third down puts a dent in his value in PPR formats.

"He's almost like a punt returner that's playing running back," Ravens defensive end Chris Canty said. "He's a jitterbug. He gets in and out of cuts very quickly. He can accelerate very quickly. He gets into those small holes.
"He's got good vision for a young back. He's fearless. He'll cut it all the way back to the back side. We're going to have to play disciplined team defense."
"Very dynamic back," strong safety James Ihedigbo said. "The things he can do out of the backfield create mismatches. He's a good player."
Bernard has rushed for 361 yards on 81 carries, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He's caught 30 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for two touchdowns against the Dolphins, gaining 79 yards on nine carries. Bernard is still losing carries to BenJarvus Green-Ellis, but Bernard continues to impress this season. It's a tough matchup for Bernard this season who is ranked 24th in our PPR rankings, making him a flex or RB3 play.
Giovani Bernard leaves game with rib injury, 'should be ok'

Update -- Michael Silver on Twitter: "Some non-brutal Bengals news: Gio Bernard has a rib issue, should be ok."
Prior to the injury, Bernard gained 104 total yards and scored two TDs, including a brilliant 35-yard TD run where he completely changed the direction of the play. He appeared to be in pain on the sideline and later headed to the locker room for X-rays. BenJarvus Green-Ellis will see extra work if Bernard misses any time. The Bengals don't have their bye until Week 12.
Gio Bernard's workload to ramp up

The gag is that the Bengals drafted Giovani Bernard to be their new short-yardage back after the 5-9, 208-pound rookie slammed it over from the 1 to start Cincinnati's scoring in Thursday night's 27-10 victory over the Colts at Paul Brown Stadium in the preseason finale.
That marked Bernard's third one-yard scoring run this season it and it got him thinking about a guy he knew in college.
"A.J. Blue," Bernard said of his North Carolina teammate. "Every time we got close they put him in there. He was a big back. We'll see how it goes in the regular season."
If Bernard isn't pulled around the goal line, then he could have an even bigger impact in his rookie season than we're projecting (#25 in PPR, #29 in standard). We're assuming BenJarvus Green-Ellis will get most of the goal-line work, but that hasn't been the case in the preseason.

OC Jay Gruden alluded to a 50/50 split in carries by the end of the season, which would give Bernard more overall touches due to his greater involvement in the passing game.
