Rams OC: Daryl Richardson "has the lead" in RB competition

ESPN NFC West - [Full Article]

As the team’s leading returning rusher, it stood to reason that speedy Daryl Richardson would be the odds-on favorite to win what many figured would be a close battle to claim the starting running back job.

Since camp has begun, Richardson has done nothing to endanger that status and, in fact, has probably put a bit of distance between himself and competitors such as Isaiah Pead, Terrance Ganaway and rookies Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham.

A week after Richardson looked sharp in the preseason opener against Cleveland with 24 yards on four carries, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that Richardson is ahead, but also noted that there’s still time for one of the others to make a push.

“I think Daryl played really, really well last week,” Schottenheimer said. “I think Isaiah’s definitely got to play some catch-up. But again, we’re not just looking at one game. He’s got a whole preseason to look at. We were very pleased with the way Daryl played last week. They’ve both done really well in practice. Would I say Daryl has the lead? Sure, but there’s a ways to go, and we expect good things from Isaiah this weekend.”

“I think Isaiah’s done some amazing things in training camp,” Schottenheimer said. “Obviously he was disappointed last week in the fumble. We talked about that with him. We said, ‘Hey, don’t let one play take away all the great things you’ve done.’ He’s made play after play, so again, try to get him some more reps. Obviously he’s still a young player. You’ve got to teach him. But build on the great things he’s doing out here on the practice field and carry that over to the field.”

Fantasy Impact:

At this point, Richardson is the RB to own in the St. Louis backfield, though Pead could press him for touches as the season wears on. Consider Richardson a middle-of-the-road RB3 with upside if he earns a big workload.

CBS Sports - [Full Article]

The departure of Steven Jackson means the Rams' running back situation is wide open, with three inexperienced vets and one rookie competing for jobs. Daryl Richardson is the favorite, mostly because he's the only guy with a resume. As Jackson's understudy last season, he ran for 475 yards, averaged 4.8 yards per carry and demonstrated big-play capability. Isaiah Pead could push him, and the Rams would like that. But he was a huge disappointment as a rookie, with only 10 carries. That's not what the Rams were expecting from their second-round pick, nor is this: Pead must serve a one-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Nevertheless, look for him to compete with rookie Zac Stacy and journeyman Terrance Ganaway for carries in what could be a crowded, running-back-by-committee approach.

Fantasy Impact:

This is a take from a national site which basically summarizes what we already know about the Rams' backfield -- it's messy. We're expecting Richardson to be the lead runner, but things could change quickly if Pead or Stacy can separate themselves from the pack.

Terrance Ganaway RB
Mario Haggan OLB
Steve Smith WR
Chris Williams T

Fantasy Impact:

Danny Amendola is active for the Rams, which comes as a bit of a surprise after being listed as doubtful with a foot injury. Amendola worked out pre-game and will play after missing practice all week. Needless to say, he's a risky fantasy start.

Rams Inactives
Matt Conrath DT
Matt Daniels S
Austin Davis QB
Terrance Ganaway RB
Rodger Saffold T
Eugene Sims DE
Steve Smith WR

Fantasy Impact:

Danny Amendola and Steven Jackson are active for the Rams, but we don't love Jackson as a start against a tough Cardinals defense. Brandon Gibson will start with Steve Smith inactive. Brian Quick and Chris Givens will get more work at WR with Smith out.

Rams rookie RB Terrance Ganaway dressed instead of Isaiah Pead, the thinking there being that he would be a big back alternative if Steven Jackson's groin injury acted up. But Jackson got through the game OK and Ganaway had no carries.
