Sure, the NFL has made it tougher on kickers to convert the point-after attempt, which is now a not-so-certain 33-yard kick. But Carpenter's five misses, including one in Sunday's 16-6 win over the Dallas Cowboys, should be a point of concern for the Bills.
But will it impact Carpenter's status with the team next season?
"Well I think with anybody -- and this is any player -- what you look to do is, regardless of the position, you are going to look to give your team the best possibility of being successful," coach Rex Ryan said Monday. "Dan [Carpenter] has had a history being successful kicking here, so that is something you can’t ignore also. Has he struggled this year? Yes, he has.
"But I think -- you know, I don’t see Lou 'The Toe' Groza coming in. If that happens, then OK. We will see what happens."
Ryan's response seemed to indicate some pause about keeping Carpenter as the kicker for next season, although it would take a worthy replacement to push him off the roster, the story indicated.

Buffalo made a pair of roster acquisitions Wednesday to address their kicking and return game, while providing depth to their receiving corps. The Bills signed veteran free agent kicker Billy Cundiff and free agent WR Denarius Moore.
The kicking game has been under scrutiny after veteran Dan Carpenter went 3-6 on field goals in the preseason. Carpenter remained on the roster Tuesday, but kickoff specialist Jordan Gay did not. Buffalo replaced Gay with veteran kicker Billy Cundiff.

The Buffalo Bills are very likely to carry kickoff specialist Jordan Gay on their 53-man roster again this season, so Dan Carpenter must be nearly perfect on his field goals and extra points to justify the move.
In two preseason games, he hasn't been.
After returning from the non-football injury list, Carpenter has missed two field goals (from 46 and 53 yards) and an extra point, which is now a 33-yard kick.
"I am concerned," Bills coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday of Carpenter. "I mean, [he] missed a couple field goals and an extra point that is concerning because he missed a lot of camp. We have to see him kick better. Quite honestly he needs to, we are the only team in the league that keeps a kickoff specialist; with that being said you do that to make sure you’re giving your kicker a chance to focus on one thing, and that is field goals."
Carpenter underwent offseason surgery and then landed on the NFI list to start training camp, missing the first two weeks of practices.

Carpenter practiced Sunday for the first time in training camp. The veteran kicker tested his leg under the supervision of a trainer before Friday's preseason opener, with Carpenter successfully kicking a 51-yard field goal into the closed end of Ralph Wilson Stadium.
He was among the NFL's better kickers last season, completing 89.5 percent of his field goals.
